Dear PM of Paint, Your apps job is for people to crop screenshots. That is what it does. Occasionally they will circle or underline a bit of the screenshot in red. That is the job of your app. That is what it does.

Feature bloat, and you don’t even need to come up with any actual ideas, just stick some AI in there!
I drew glasses on a guy in Paint a few days ago! Such a useful tool. (AI in PAINT fergodssakes. Fucking ew.)
"Nobody actually does anything in Paint" says person who hasn't looked at their own profile pic in forever.
I can guarantee a lot of the OS people are not unhappy about the direction things have been going in… but you know we must enshittify Company badly needs breaking up into OS/Apps/Xbox/Cloud.
I’ve used IrfanView for years for this purpose, glad to not have any reason to change.
Shottr is pretty good as well, doesn’t require an account, is free (if you dont mind the occasional nag window), and has no “AI”.
Also using the paint bucket to color in shapes made by random squiggles.
And maybe add some text and an arrow.
pay no attention to those weirdos recreating the sistine chapel pixel by pixel
Can’t wait to use AI so Ctrl-C can decide what it thinks I want to copy
God no. If AI learns how to Ctrl-C Ctrl-V meaningfully, I'll be out of a job!
Can't wait for AI in Snipping Tool!
it already has "search this with bing" in snipping tool
It's a good thing Bing still sucks.
I occasionally use blue, but still don’t need AI to do so.
All I want Paint to be able to do is add text to images, and be able to keep editing annotations until I save it. And yet 25 years later they've done this instead of any of those.
Photos app on iPad does those things. And you can select and copy the writing in a photograph. Including obviously screenshots.
Well fancy you with your iPad

Every PM at Microsoft: so you mean, Satya wants AI in our product?
"every single app across my OS is actually just an upsell opportunity for our premium chatgpt service" -- thoughts dreamt up by people who have lost sight of what their product is *for*
"Would you like AI with that" would work a lot better if it was as tenth as good as french fries.
The thing is it's not a question. "You get it with AI or you get nothing at all."
Not just Microsoft. Google too. Pretty much everyone.
"But how else will I be able to demonstrate growth through my quarterly KPIs?"
ngl literally every single part of microsoft thinking their mission is to now juice KPI number of one very specific other part of microsoft instead of, y'know, their own feature, is a bit disturbing
As they say, you gotta follow the money. The investor money, that is. Not the consumer's.
company has got completely addicted to AI investor money. Idk, maybe they're right, but it sure feels like they're going all in on it very aggressively to create demand rather than capture it
They're not alone. I feel like I'm constantly turning off AI* "features" on Apple products.
I only ever use AI to ask it to turn itself off. Every time it says it can't do it or gives incorrect instructions.
the bit that makes me think this is about the money, not the feature, is that these are never *local* models. They're *always* bolt-on subscriptions
There appears to be serious depletion of imagination in tech and they're flailing after something they can call growth to soothe the quarterly earnings calls.
"yes I want premium notepad features" -- literally no customer ever in the history of computing
been using notepad++ for over a decade Might be overblown for the most basic user, but a superior piece of software
the only usage of AI that i will accept is programmatically generated levels for chip's challenge
That's ABSOLUTELY what they're doing! No one wants this AI stuff. Certainly not for pictures. You have to already know a ton about visual arts to be able to use it and then it still sucks. None of the user-friendly ones let you draw, say, stick figures then it turns it into a cartoon.
I hope they add AI to the screen capture feature next. They could call it Clippy.
They showed off a new version of clippy in their upcoming copilot release.
Microsoft has invested at LEAST $10 BILLION of its own money in OpenAI. They have got to get ChatGPT to pay off.
The fact Copilot Plus got binned and wrapped into the Microsoft 365 consumer subscription should tell you everything. Gotta get those OKRs delivered for performance reviews, 10% extra paying for AI they don’t even want this quarter. That and Microsoft Recall. MS are drunk on their own AI sauce.
That you have to pretend cancel Microsoft 365 to get an option without it is telling.
Oh, that actually works now? Nice. I guess Mrs. Tewson doesn't have to burn down their campus after all.
They're all intoxicated--it's in the water supply
I can't remember how I used to play solitaire before I could get copilot to do it for me.
Satya must fully believe that gen AI is the next Azure in terms of business opportunities. There's no other reason to force every team to redesign their features to be AI-forward
He might be right! The trouble is this is a very large bet and he might not be
Recent YouGov poll results came as no surprise to anyone except tech CEOs
Making me not regret the $40 / yr I spend for a Snagit license.
Snagit is more valuable than Office.
IrfanView has a Paint dialogue feature that is reasonable. Has bucket fill (w threshold !), text, circles/rectangles, arrows (that aren't that great). Get it. Runs on any Windows machine.
Sometimes I look to see if it has a spray paint tool that can spray bricks.
