We can assume every HHS agency will pull back. Grants.gov is not the only source of capital for research. Get Sponsored Projects and Endowment people involved and pivot. The money doesn't just evaporate.

This is just untrue. The proposed 10% endowment tax on foundations in the recent budget just vaporized 10% of philanthropically funded projects and kills the sustainability of their long term funding.

How else are billionaires supposed to pay for their yachts-within-a-yacht? That's strategic leadership for ya

Genuinely I’m all for increased taxes the revenue is supposed to be used for public good not kickbacks and a backhanded route to punishing universities.

Taxes are great when they are progressive (instead of regressive, eg tariffs and adding $3.5T to the deficit)

I wasn't aware of the 10% fdn proposal you mention. Under that scenario I'd wager money will be moved from endowment to another line or vehicle.

Because it’s not like the administration will demand control of hiring as they did at Columbia and Harvard. Nope, if the money is moved into endowed chairs, they’ll just leave well enough alone, right?🙄 Most of these gifts have strings attached and many cannot be so easily repurposed

The university endowment is being proposed at 21%. 10% is just for philanthropic non profit foundations. I recommend reading the budget proposal.

JFC. I made it to p30 of a 46 page top-level budget letter to the Chair of Appropriations, and scanned the rest in disbelief. I'm gobsmacked. Fuck this; all of it.

Major biotech venture capital firms just laid off their entire biotech innovation teams. You’re kidding yourself if you think research funding can’t just evaporate.

My point is that funding may disappear from one source, but it appears elsewhere. Uncovering it is key.
