Yeah me too. It wasn’t until my teens that I learned things a little differently.

I was so proud!!!!
💔
I 'member
Ah that explains Alligator Alcatraz… a melting pot… Hitler used an oven, Trump a melting pot
Funny, sad, and horrifying, all at once.
Then the little Japanese kid said "they put my grandparents in a detention camp." Then the little black kid said "they sold my great-great-great grandparents as slaves." Then the little Indian kid said " my tribe used to own this whole state" Then the teacher said "fuck it" and pulled out a bottle
Pretty sure they have a copy of Norman Rockwell's Golden Rule in the White House that they throw darts at to decide which race to attack next.
I wasn't proud. I just wanted it to be over.
Elementary school wasnt as bad as high school! 😱
The continued raise of the confederate christians changed education so no one knows the history of their evils and genocide of Native Americans, blacks, Asian, and brown people.
100%. We have generations of uneducated, brainwashed, spuritually abused people who think democrats are literal demons. This isn't a joke. These people have gone off the ledge.
Then we became a Big Beautiful Salad, which I liked too. But MAGA n the Big Orange Hamburder don’t like veggies n greens. 😡
Lol, they've been lying to children since forever 🤣🤣🤣
It's definitely melting
Yep, I sure do. When I was in 8th grade, I had to write an essay about freedom and what it means. My essay won at my school, and I took 4th in the entire state. Maybe I'm pollyanna-ish, but I never thought we'd be here.
yep we used to believe that bullshit and trump quite teaching that
🥺

🇺🇸⚖️ Out of many one. 💙
That's all we we're taught in school, plus our fathers went overseas an shot an killed millions of fascists to cement those ideas !! Still strong to this day,,,
Exactly this!!!
it has always been that way but it didn't come without a fight. it has become a country where most young people don't know anything about heritage. i do know that the sons of Norway has become Scandian based or kissed one of them.
Canada is referred to as a cultural mosaic. All pieces fitting together to coexist within a country.
The mosaic idea is one the US should adopt, once it kicks fascism to the curb! Fuck trump and his white christian nationalist sycophants!
That is much more beautiful than what I was taught. I was taught that we were a tossed salad, each piece adding flavor, but out individualism was important, too. The melting pot idea was said to be old fashioned and almost racist because it did not allow for each culture to shine on its own.
We've had a lot of bad stuff in our history, but there was a time when I felt we were making strides in the right direction. We'd legalized gay marriage, elected a black president... it seemed like we were on an upwards arc. That time feels like it was millennia ago. 🫤
“…with liberty and justice for all.”
It's all bullshit propaganda, of course, like the brave European "heroes" who took the land from the Natives because they were "in the way of progress" and weren't "doing anything with it".
Black and white encyclopedia brittanica in fifth grade. Archer Elementary. Archer, Nebraska. All we have to do is search your hand held
All over the World this story was told in English lessons about USA.
Well...being a melting pot is a problem. That denotes assimilation, not acceptance!
I remember right after Watergate when my history teachers taught us that our system of government makes it impossible for a tyrant to be in the White House.
And the schools taught us that all citizens have rights and freedoms and the government shouldn’t interfere with that!
USA. A country in ruins with only hatred left.
Now, the trump has turned it into a pile of Russian 💩
I remember being in kindergarten and seeing my classmates of different skin tones and my father telling me that God makes a variety of wonderful people to fill the world and our country was lucky to have a plethora of each and every one. I miss people talking like that.
I do research in the cemeteries of my small New England city. Of the French-Canadian dead; about 60 percent so far immigrated from Quebec and New Brunswick. The municipal cem is about 25 percent Finnish immigrants; the oldest RC cem is overwhelmingly Irish immigrants. Speaks for itself.
I'm a Mainer, a good portion of my ancestors are French-Canadian immigrants and Natives from the Maine/Canadian tribes. The other side has the Mass Bay Colony puritans. By now, my kids have several countries in their line. Finally got a little Irish in there with the red hair :)
Go to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn NY. That area is still wonderfully diverse.
I would love to visit Green-Wood! Many ancestors of my American family are there.
Remember when we had Civics classes and read newspapers and Time magazines that weren’t bending a knee to the POTUS? Remember that Nixon resigned in shame from bipartisan investigations?
Yes! I do remember that. I also remember teaching using Time for Kids and USA Studies Weekly.
This is only the feeling when you're not poc growing up, growing up poc even "Americanized" or "passing" whatever— you learn real young that the "American dream" is pretty bullshit You grow up not feeling equal to everyone else and I grew up military family too! Lol but didnt think it was THIS bad
Up until about high school when I started looking for some real history books.
Americans were free to choose democracy or fascism. They chose the latter
