Y'all a number of these men in tennis might could benefit from some therapy (you paid good money for that racquet Mr. Medvedev!). The wildest part was the camera shot of his wife who was rightly embarrassed.

Two yr old men.
(He almost certainly did not in fact pay any money for that racquet)
Reminds me of when I was about 12 and broke a controller out of frustration while playing Virtua Fighter 4. Granted. I was 12. But even then I recognized it was a bad look and took steps to address it!
They just get them for free?! I am such a sweet summer child sometimes.
Either he got it for free, through a direct sponsorship or his coach, or he got it at a steep discount through his coach who has a sponsorship with whatever company that is.
Is all their equipment and clothing free or heavily discounted?
I would say if you’re getting into 1000*/Masters tournaments without having to qualify, you’re not paying for gear. Under Masters, they’re getting varying discounts, might get a few things free. (1000 tournaments mean you get 1000 points for winning.)
I never thought about this and now I want to read 15 different articles on the ways professional tennis players procure their equipment. I want the shipping and logistics of all of this.
On his podcast, Andy Roddick has gone into the money side of being a tennis professional. He may have talked about equipment sponsorships on other episodes as well.
Lol I'm actually currently going through back episodes of this right now
That kind of figures! I've been loving your comments on this Medvedev incident. Would love to see that cut-away to his wife but no luck so far.
Gah sorry that's from a different point in the match I think and it's labeled wrong so I deleted
Yeah, high-level professional players in just about any individual sport are getting their equipment through sponsorships. The Williams sisters probably haven't actually bought a tennis racket since the mid-90s.
I mean, I would give them whatever they wanted from me. But yea I had never thought about this for tennis (or golf). I'm going to explore some articles because I want to learn more about the structures of this system (how selection happens, the logistics of it all).
Let me know what you find! I've never looked into it.
Will do. I've generally only followed team sports outside the Olympics so this just never came up for me before and now I'm curious.
That you’ll need to dig for yourself or find someone far, far more knowledgeable about this than I. Which means I’ll probably spend the next two hours looking myself instead of sleeping because now I’m interested…
Hahha oh that's what I meant, I'll look around. If I find something, I'll share with you.
Thank you!

It appears that Iga and him are both sponsored by that brand. www.reddit.com/r/tennis/s/4...
Honestly tennis players all seem to have that simmering rage where you really just don’t even want to start with them and that seems like a stressful type of person to be around. Probably why execs love tennis so much
The women seem to rarely be afforded the same opportunity
Truth!
Also, this popped off during the same match. You can hear all the insults ol boy lobs at the umpire and this is why they would never let me do that job because what you're not gonna do is insult me because you're losing. www.reddit.com/r/tennis/com...
A behavior that in another setting is called wife-abuse.
He's always been a hothead, but that behavior was embarrassing for everyone.
I did an honest to goodness
I remember when behavior considerably less volatile and violent cost one Ms. Williams the championship on that very court.
Also also, I get that the crowd just wants more tennis but the camera shots make it seem like the audience is primarily hedge fund bros who just got denied access to a hip new restaurant
Yes I've been exploring how players get gear and trying to learn more about the business and logistics of sponsorships and wow www.espn.com/tennis/story...
Ah this article gets much closer to what I was trying to understand about the structure of money flows in tennis www.forbes.com/sites/timnew...
That is the most night-session-at-the-US-Open thing. It's famous for this kind of shit.
I mean I don't need a Wimbledon-like atmosphere but that is a lot
Ah, for the days of McEnroe, Connors, and Nastase. The night sessions are their own "special" kind of thing.
And, Medvedev has always been a bit of a punk.
Yeah, Medvedev's a d*ck (not the first time). Wasn't watching but saw this on SC last night and glad his almost miraculous comeback fell short.
Also Benjamin Bonzi is just a tremendous athlete name, announcers clearly love saying it and for good reason
Man, you pull this on a fencing referee and if you're lucky you get a the polite warning of a raised eyebrow and half-reaching inside their jacket for a black card. If you're unlucky they just go right on reaching.
I do not understand tennis, but the comments are wild!
I barely understand it lol. Here's a good article explaining what happened. www.cbssports.com/tennis/news/...
Do you suspect (like many of the comments) that he had paid the photog?
Naw because no way on earth does that photographer want to have their credentials pulled for the rest of the us open (so now they can't work)
👍🏼
I mean, destroying his racket is one thing, but I’m pretty sure I saw some damage to the edge of that bench. Other players will be using it too. Why are men so emotional?! 🙄
It’s so embarrassing how many of these “men” have behaved in tennis for decades now. Pathetic
That, right there, is a little boy who was told to stop crying when he felt big feelings and was upset. He's got nowhere for that frustration to go but through anger and violence. This is why we MUST dismantle the harmful effects of the Patriarchy. It hurts men, too.
I swore that was an old clip of John McEnroe 😳
Embarrassing
Me to my six year old: I think we need to go take a minute to calm down, do you want to squeeze this gooey ball
I didn’t see the match but just read an article about it. This guy could definitely use some therapy. He’s a good player but his tantrums are stupid.
It's wild friend! My year of exploring tennis has certainly provided some entertainment. I read enough to now learn that his style is a "counterpuncher" and it's hard to maintain greatness with that as you age because it's so taxing. So he is, of course, mainly mad at his body for getting older.
Oh, interesting. He was never quite as good as someone like Nadal. But also, his inability to control his emotions has long harmed him. And yeah, he gets far more leeway than women when he’s smashing racquets and otherwise raging,
my sense is that people mostly enjoy his antics, but I have never been a fan.
I couldn't believe there's no red card or whatever equivalent for his behavior. I started shouting "tech! give him a technical!" at the tv because I just couldn't process it.
No foul; just make him play the remainder of his matches with that racket.
Lol that loss put him out of the us open but they should definitely make him play with it during the next match
He might get fined after the match. But I’ve seen women lose points in the match for “racquet abuse.”
Also, Nick Kyrgios. I wonder why he's treated differently...
i just snorted
You know I was holding up the T with my arms. I need some accountability and I'll bring it from other sports if I have to!
I appreciate the commitment though lol.
Took breaks and everything
i take it tennis has different norms re: smashing equipment than baseball (i don’t know anything about tennis)
I barely know anything but it seems like tennis also has different rules for some athletes versus others as well because I don't think most women would be fine after this
oof
I very honestly find it quite terrifying how methodically he goes about destroying his racket.
When I played in HS, coach would scream at us if we so much as dropped our racquet on the court in frustration during practice. But the boys' team members could act like Medvedev & it was no big deal. That behavior is so embarrassing!
I'm very new to this but yea the gender differences are so wild. He cursed the umpire out for nearly 6 minutes, then lost, then mocked the winner before destroying his racquet.
every opponent of his has gotta be taking notes on what they can say to cause a crash out 😹
