Is it depressing because there aren't many examples or because people ignore them
It seems as though any non-mainstream culture has to be 'rediscovered', reasserted, and recontextualized at (depressingly) regular intervals, if only to counter other narratives, though it can feel like a losing battle against perpetual reforgetting
2nd Brian. The debate about this in Scotland in media & academe rehearsed these arguments in early-90s. Then then a certain novel early 2020s & round it goes. James Kelman won the Booker Prize in 1994 & is woefully underrespected.
