It's also cultural, social rules around eye contact. and sometimes dudes do the thing where they lean in and stare like they're trying to be really earnest and soul-gazey and instead come off like serial killers. often they were told to do this by some PUA guru or something (or are serial killers)

Fair. There are nuances and cultural differences to consider. My main point is to pay attention in an obvious but not uncomfortable way. Interrupting and not asking follow-up questions are things to avoid, for example.

If you search "eye contact and attraction" or something similar you find lots of stuff about how 4 seconds or greater of eye contact will create a bond of trust and intimacy etc. Which suggests to me that we're not really designed for eye contact as a norm. More occasional glances. Also PU stuff.

To an extent, I think the key here is being yourself. If you are naturally kinda shy and don’t make eye contact well, trying to force it will give off the serial killer vibe I think. I’m not the most confident and extroverted person, but some women have found that charming. One married me.

Yep. Part of the trick is realizing not everyone is a match for us and be willing to look until someone "clicks". A frequent line between my SO and me is .... being with me means she has questionable judgment, and then we both crack up. 😂
