Have to disagree with @npr.org. Putin did *not* invade Ukraine to prevent NATO troops from getting any closer to Russia. NATO has bordered the USSR and then Russia since its founding in 1949. Currently the Baltic states and now Finland border Russia. Putin invaded Ukraine to conquer it. Period.

The logical fallacy is glaring: if NATO close to Ru borders was a problem, then why invade Uk -- a country that borders NATO countries -- and absorb it into the Ru federation thereby getting closer to NATO countries?
Wish I had a dollar for every time I need to say "Have to disagree with @npr.org." This is an especially bad practice of theirs to give such credence to blatantly bad faith claims.
Putin, having strung along Trump--easy to punk the narcissist--senses Trump is weak, flapping in the wind, and paralyzed by his own prevaricating spinelessness... What Putin is hoping is that Trump will attempt to save himself by, in effect, creating more distance from NATO/EU allies. RESIST!

I agree. Putin is trying to get the old USSR back and he thought the best way to start the process was to invade the country felt would offer up the least resistance.
And he is afraid for democracy. When his prisoned people smell it they will want it.

So does Canada. Not quite as close as Alaska, but we have Pacific and Arctic coasts with Russia across the water (or ice).
Completely true. But after all Trump has put Canada through, my policy is to leave Canada out of it whenever possible. Cut them some slack!

Putin has attacked his neighbors, directly or through proxies, multiple times. Who has he not attacked? NATO states. So I agree, though we have to note that Putin does not believe Ukraine is a legitimate state. He thinks it belongs to Russia. Just imperial territory.
