my college kid was heartbroken when on the first day of class the professor said "I used to spend 3 weeks teaching this part, but just have AI create it for you and we'll skip it." Skipping the most creative part of the work. The part my kid most looked forward to.
I can't believe how quickly and thoroughly AI infiltrated everything.
I would drop that class so fast it would’ve made the registers head spin then I would’ve written it extensive complaint to the department head.

A writing professor one of my kids really respected suggested last year that they use AI to generate ideas when they were struggling with an assignment topic. It completely changed my kid's opinion of the prof. for the worse. What are we doing?

What is the point? Why are you in an English class if AI is writing your papers for you? My daughter, who just got her MFA, thinks she was turned down for a community college job because when they asked her how she would integrate AI, she said she planned to use her own critical thinking.
I'm also wondering why professors are on board with this. If AI can write papers, grade them, & plan lessons, they will find themselves out of a job. But really, just give every kid a college a degree who knows how to plug assignments into AI if they don't have to use their brains or their voice.
That's horrible. And horribly lazy. You'd think that professors would know research is already showing that relying on AI is bad for our brains.
The AI dumbfucks think the final outcome/final product is the most important thing, when in truth doing the writing, reading the details, thinking about the issue, processing & synthesizing the information is actually the most important, most useful, most valuable & usually the most enjoyable part.

As a university English instructor (and also an author), I will never use the robot in my teaching. I put a ridiculous amount of effort into trying to convince students that the point is to do the thing, even if you do it badly. OF COURSE you're going to do it badly. You've never done it before.
It's in trying the thing that you learn to do the thing AND you learn why the thing is worth doing. Going "ChatGPT, summarise this novel" or "ChatGPT, give me ideas for a story about X" will get you mediocre slop, and you WON'T HAVE DONE THE THING.
The fun part of writing a story is going for a walk and accidentally solving a plot snarl while looking at a bird. The fun part of writing about someone else's story is suddenly seeing the cool patterns in the text. DISCOVERING the cool patterns. And being excited about the discovery.
I will spend three goddamn weeks "teaching this part" instead of letting the robot do it in ten seconds because the robot is not thinking, and if you use it, neither are you. And if I use it, neither am I.
Sorry...I saw your post and had feelings about it. Also, I love your books, which is beside the point. But I just wanted to say.

On my son's first day in college English, the professor talked up the advantages of AI compositions. He then asked the students to write a short essay on what they were most excited about and least excited by in the class. My son's response outlined why he had no interest in using AI to write.

what school? what professor? what class? call them out. we need to stop letting people get away with this shit. we need to shut all this Ai shit down. force the teacher's hand, shut down the class until they give in. or make sure they get fired. people are being too complacent.
It seems like a lot of the push for this is coming from the schools, admins are pushing hard on “teach the kids ai so they’ll be competitive”

Yeah I was vague for privacy. But this isn't unusual. My friend's daughter just started college and her first professor warned the students "drop any class if the professor DOESN'T include instruction about how to integrate AI in your work." I heard the same from a different friend this year.

Yes. Focusing on the ease of the product and not on the process. And adding salt to the wound, all my books were illegally used to train the LLMs that are robbing my kid of a full education.
