Yep. When I lived on Bonaire, it took a while for me to grasp that it wasn't me being lazy, that it was actually a social obligation on my part. Part of having money was sharing money, and the best way to share money was to hire work, even work I could easily do.

This is in countries with extreme inequality such that there is an underclass that leads a standard of living far below the middle class. Which is a lot of countries. In Southern California you still find people looking for cleaning at less than minimum wage (b/c of our undocumented population).

Setting minimum wage to a baseline standard of living and enforcing labor laws even for domestic help is why most of the USA doesn't have ready access to exploitable labor.

Hiring the equivalent of one full time worker — at a living wage — used to define the term middle class in the US. It was considered a societal responsibility to share your largess. Think, Leave it to Beaver or even The Brady Bunch. The DIY movement was a scam to keep wages, esp women’s, low.
