DHS has the secret service and the Coast Guard so far as I am aware, so not all bad, but absolutely we'll need to root out MAGAts across the executive branch, top to bottom.

They can just go back to the executive branch and DOT where they came from.

Do you think the coast guard and secret service don’t exist before DHS was created after 9/11?

Burke @burke.su

Why the fuck would I think that. I'm arguing against the DHS being abolished entirely. Do you think the Coast Guard should go back to the Department of Transportation and that the Secret Service should go back to the Department of the Treasury?

Kathy Byrne @kab-fair.bsky.social

they won’t be returned to their original agencies as the USCG actually saw a budget boost when viewed as law enforcement & not just rescuing swimmers, DHS isn’t the problem it’s the people currently in charge & ice wasn’t a gestapo agency under Biden, the country needs immigration reform not sadists

Burke @burke.su

Exactly what I'm thinking. As far as the Coast Guard getting a budget boost, that's probably a good thing. Anyone who thought they only ever rescued swimmers was wrong, they are part of the armed forces, and do transfer to the Department of Defense in times of war. Nice to see a voice of reason.

DannyOldSchool @dannyoldschool.bsky.social

Yes it’s a military branch and should just be department of defense all the time.

avatar
Burke @burke.su

Interesting, I thought you wanted them back in the Department of Transportation because that "worked fine" Besides, their primary role is policing, unlike every other armed force in the U.S. That alone is probably enough of a reason to throw them in a branch with other federal police forces...

But they were also underfunded during their time in the DOT. I'd say the DHS is a good fit.

I said it did work fine for decades which is true. You don’t seem to understand nuance or compromise which is why our side never gets shit done. It’s all or nothing and that shit doesnt work in a democracy

Don’t conflate keeping something that works with tradition. Those are two separate things and you know it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Burke @burke.su

Just because "it ain't broke" doesn't mean it can't work better. In any case the coast guard "ain't broke" now, but "fixing it" by removing them from the DHS seems to be what you're advocating for.

aug 13, 2025, 5:34 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
DannyOldSchool @dannyoldschool.bsky.social

Of course it can work better. No one said it can’t. It should be a DOD branch. They literally guard our coastal borders from all sorts of threats and are a military branch. DHS should go bye bye

Because you offered up those agencies as a defense to not abolishing DHS, when they could easily be returned their original departments. you said what you said.

Burke @burke.su

The current organization of the DHS makes logical sense. There is no reason to disband it. I offered those two agencies as examples of reasonable responsibilities of the DHS. Disbanding it as soon as Democrats are in power because the Trump administration misused ICE would be stupid and pointless.

The Patriot Act was Dick Cheney’s idea, a man who bumped around Govt. since the 60s and always had 1 complaint, The Constitution was a Problem, DHS was created with that thought

Completely agree I said it when it was created, it was a monster created for someone to come along and abuse it, FEMA staffers are currently being reassigned to ICE, other agencies have lost their Discipline, the Patriot Act should never have been passed which created DHS

aug 13, 2025, 2:57 am • 2 0 • view

Burke @burke.su

The DHS was created by the Homeland Security Act, not the Patriot Act. This is blatant misinformation. I 100% agree that the Patriot Act is an absolute failure of our country, it is up there among the pieces of legislation which I despise the most.

Burke @burke.su

Okay then, I'll bite. I don't think I've seen a good explanation yet for why the DHS should be dissolved. Care to elaborate?

avatar
Darrin @badgerknight5.bsky.social

Another point is this, and it’s just my viewpoint, our Govt. is always supposed to work on a system of checks & balances, if all these agencies fold into DHS, where is the check on DHS?? The media?? The Courts?? Who investigates that Department??

aug 13, 2025, 4:20 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
Burke @burke.su

It's been the courts and congress it's always been the courts and congress. Whether or not the FBI or the CIA is part of the DHS, they are part of the Executive Branch. I don't think gathering them into a department is somehow making it easier for them to get away with shit.

Darrin @badgerknight5.bsky.social

Am all encompassing agency that can control every other agency that’s my problem with it, if you have no problem with it, it’s none of my concern, I’m older than this system, 9/11 came. the CIA and the military tracked down Bin Laden and killed him, DHS had no hand in it

aug 13, 2025, 4:13 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
Burke @burke.su

It seems unlikely to me that the DHS would be in charge of a large operation outside of the US anyways. Regardless, they all fall under the executive branch, anyways. Organizing agencies with overlapping missions under the same branch just seems... efficient to me.

There's a reason that DHS has them now lol - restructuring a logical partition of resources in the executive branch for semantics sake seems excessive.

No, it was absolutely unnecessary in the first place. The Patriot Act is a violation of our 4th amendment rights, and everything about it needs to be abolished.

The patriot act has nothing to do with this lmao. The Coast Guard became part of the Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003. This transfer was a result of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. Prior to this, the Coast Guard had been part of the Department of Transportation since 1967.

The U.S. Secret Service was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on March 1, 2003 at the same time as the coast guard. Prior to this, it was with the Department of the Treasury.
