I live in Texas, & I haven’t voted for a statewide winner in probably 25 years. I still have a strong incentive to vote in every single election: I’m a citizen, and I have obligations. In some times &places, people die for the right to vote. I have very limited sympathy for “my vote doesn’t matter.”

and most of them DO vote! it’s just there’s always only just one guy to vote for in the general election for county highway supervisor, you know? we don’t have enough organized democrats in many rural areas b/c they don’t win

This is why @blueheronfarm.bsky.social suggests that everyone who’s able should try to run for something

oh no argument there! i’m more saying that we have many, many more purple people in rural areas than pure red, and that’s a good thing! they are getting energized by no kings etc and that’s so important b/c then they realize how many others are really out there.

Agree! We shouldn’t write off “rural” or “the south” as “getting what they deserve.” At the same time, there is a whole group of voters who continually fail to connect what they vote for with what they get. That is a complex problem of human nature.
