A lot of generalisations in that article. Union is seen as an "international sport" with Sooper Rugby just a warm up/gloried trial. NRL is not just going to 17 teams, it'll be 18 with one in PNG. There's just more games and so more money. The UK media consistently ignores the elephant in the room.
I learned a bit about this from @drtomjones.bsky.social a while ago. Is it just that football soaks up all the cash? Or does test rugby soak up all the cash? You can see why CVC thought rugby was undervalued, but TV deals have got worse since their investment
ALF & NRL : A draft system, salary caps, no international games, season-long single competitions, a sports-mad public ... it really isn't rocket science. LNR understands this ... but those who love the international game simply don't.
