Anecdote alert, but a gay colleague told me a long time ago that he had met many homophobes...and had been to bed with most of them.

Anecdotes are currently all we have, and we shouldn't be basing sweeping generalisations on them. Of *course* there are people who project what they feel about themselves. But there's no reliable data to suggest it's a high percentage, or even statistically significant, which is what the OP asserts.
I know. I read all comments before responding, including yours. I do understand what anecdotal means and I’m not making a sweeping generalization that homophobes are “likely”closeted and self-hating. But I think it does happen and it’s okay to talk about it. I’m interested in why it happens.
Can confirm same, and a friend revealed that one of our most racist and homophobic fellow colleagues was harassing and threatening him after rejecting his advances. And he didn’t deny it when called on it (got mad, though). Anecdotal, maybe, but a seemingly common one.
