i do sincerely think it's comparable to the way abortion access is often medically gatekept, with access being dependent on finding a medical professional who will deem you worthy of treatment especially since the restriction of both are driven by the same interests

I’m trying to figure out how to write something about this at the moment. At least in the UK, when the legality of bottom surgery was cleared up at the end of the sixties, this was achieved via analogy to abortion, and on proviso that the same conditions were attached

I first saw this comparison made by Florence Ashley (arguing that transition should be available on demand, just like abortion should be), and it has stuck with me ever since. Both transition and abortion realise patient's autonomy over their own body, and both are being restricted because of this.
