I do see this terminology constantly here though. It’s everywhere in liberal spaces. Some of it is a major turnoff. Just one example: I looked into a podcast about fanfics and they didn’t use the word woman. They used a technical term about assigned at birth. That’s insane. I gave up.

i'm sure those podcasters would be *heartbroken* to know they lost the viewership of someone who thinks talking about assigned gender is "insane", but what does this have to do with the democratic party?

If you're determining political theory and vocabulary from a podcast about fanfics, you've chosen poorly. (Related: Just because you don't like a thing doesn't mean it's bad or incorrect - that requires analysis of ethical and moral concerns - it just means you don't like it)

how would the Democratic Party stop a podcast about fanfics from using normal modern terms about gender assigned at birth

By all means, don't listen to a podcast if it bothers you,... but whatever happened to not being so thin skinned about the words that other people choose to use? You can perceive people choosing to use a particular vocabulary as scolding, but that's really just your perception.

It literally only bothers you because you choose to let it bother you. Roll your eyes and move on. This is EXACTLY the same tendency that that leads to conservatives freaking out about pronouns in email signatures (a thing that came into existence to avoid confusion.)

You listened to a podcast hosted by some randos, didn't like how those individuals preferred to talk on *their show* that *you are in no way obliged to listen to*, and that's somehow the fault of Democratic politicians?

I see technical terms in two places, when i look at technical discussions, and when people try to use them to scare other people.

Yeah, there are a lot of people in the world. Most of them aren’t Democratic Party politicians or spokespeople. Which is the point. The Democrats can’t - and shouldn’t - control what randos on the internet say and holding that against them is fucking deranged

And yet that’s our reality. But I am talking about something more subtle. Apolitical spaces which are about art or sports etc. We need a place for liberals and even potential liberals that doesn’t turn people off with weird language & needless scolding. We used to be good at this! We need it back.

I am with you on politicians who are more small c conservative. I am just pointing out that this language became popular on old school Twitter and got repeated by, say, TV executives in interviews. It’s everywhere. Maybe less so now but I think it really turned off people including Dem voters.

It’s more cultural than a thing put out in Democratic politician statements. But maybe we need to talk about it. By the way, I have listened to several of your podcasts and you and your colleagues are plain spoken. I have heard it elsewhere in mainstream entertainment podcasts.

All we do as a nation is talking about it tho. You can't swing a dead cat in supposed left leaning media without hitting an article about how "the leftists are saying pregnant person instead of pregnant woman!" I personally am so tired of hearing about what the people on Tumblr say.

I don't understand why it is an issue at all. Perhaps it comes down to conservatives screaming about it for decades at this point until it just becomes perceived wisdom that it is actually a problem. We let conservatives dictate the terminology.

Was this a major podcast with tens of thousands of listeners, or a podcast run by a few people for their friends and a small circle of listeners? If the latter, it ain't evidence of anything but your media illiteracy.
