Because of my book research, I’ve been digging around a lot in Church-era stuff. It is wildly bracing to inhabit a world where congress takes its constitutional responsibilities seriously, across parties. Serious people, serious times, looking at serious issues.
I also think a lot about Barry Goldwater at SSCI in the 80s. He did not give a fuck that he was an R under an R president. He was chairman of the Senate Intel committee and demanded Reagan respect his constitutional prerogatives.
In all fairness, Goldwater was always sort of fighting his own independent wars (which is good Goldwater-Nichols was very good)

Goldwater-nichols is the worst thing to happen to US defense organization ... but everything that came before it (also love that CENTCOM was like this even before the Goldwater-Nichols)
Seriously, what we need in the Congressional majority are a couple of honest to god egomaniacs who actually want to wield the immense powers of their office in a serious manner, not the current batch of spineless sycophants.
