Except for the part where he actually wants a peace deal. I don’t think he cares. Putin certainly doesn’t.

He thought he could just bully Ukraine into giving up. When that didn’t work, he gave up because like all bullies, he’s basically weak and lazy. (This, BTW, is why everyone should stand up to him on everything. He will back down, walk away, and give up if you make it unpleasant.)

He’s really just realized that he’s not making progress on getting Ukraine to sell out in a massively unfavorable “peace” deal, which Russia would promptly disregard, at best they’d be invading again in a decade.
