Well from what I’ve read, gerrymandering is common and perfectly legal in the USA, so good luck with the lawsuit. Probably be 5 years before it makes it to the SCOTUS, and the damage will already have been done.

It doesn’t have to make it all the way to SCOTUS for it to be rendered ineffective. A circuit court judge/panel could issue a ruling that blocks it.

Gerrymandering for the sole purpose of depriving voting rights to racial groups is a direct violation of the 14th amendment.

If you read the text, the plaintiffs are asking for an injunction which would temporarily stop the gerrymander thereby delaying the process and depending on the courts, this would throw a wrench into Abbott’s scheme.

I'm not defending the TX Dems that chose to return to the floor consequently allowing this to pass, but a major reason they returned was because they were told that it's better to have this be challenged in court.

Another reason is that they're severely underpaid and have jobs they couldn't leave any longer without potentially being fired. It's another argument for a UBI, IMO. People need a minimum viable income to live on so that they can make other decisions without having to weigh financial considerations.

Can we do a national class action gerrymandering lawsuit since they are basically screwing the nation? I'm no lawyer but the Supreme (Imperial) Court seems to really think those are important now.

If this gerrymandering can be reversed legally, then voters here in CA should vote against our own redistricting in November and continue supporting our current independent commission. However, if the TX power grab holds, we all need to vote in favor of fighting fire with fire.

The case is going to take too long going through the courts. The special election is in a little over two months, I wouldn't be surprised if the case drags through the courts for years. Independent commissions are a great idea and should be universal once this attack on our democracy is thwarted.

I agree. If there is no resolution by the time the election comes, then we must vote for redistricting. I would like us to gerrymander until we can change it nationally, but the voters here in California were pretty firm about independent commissions. That may change.

This is at best a stop gap. You don't fix political problems with lawsuits. You just kick them down the road and they get worse. The political center has LOST. You need to honestly ask yourselves why and adjust. Hopefully before it's too late.

the same subject had been reduced to 45% It doesn't sound to good for the MAGA legislature and hopefully they will learn when the mid terms come up for a vote! The voters will see they will never listen to them! A convicted felon, rapist and pedophile is more important to them than their voters!
