Congress would block the tariffs on allies knowing their consituents are getting killed by higher prices.
Congress would block the tariffs on allies knowing their consituents are getting killed by higher prices.
And basically the editorial on firms the illegality of the tax (oopps - tariffs) by saying “get Congress to do it”, without realizing that Congress (in totality” does not want to do it, the votes would fail, and Trump would look (more) stupid
Those congress folks don’t want to have to vote for tariffs and then have to explain why to their constituents. Now they can blame 47
Oh, great!😡
We democrats must prepare and arm ourselves against this tyrant and he must come down how ever if not by vote
Would love the GOP to affirm their love for the tariffs that are killing their states and it's people. Good plan.
Total fascists!
I've never been more thankful that I canc'd my @washingtonpost.com & @nytimes.com subscriptions last year! (The $.50 a month spam emails just won't stop! Do they think I'll suddenly become a fascist supporter? 😏 )
Ha ha, I read that as Sperm!
😂 - that would have been the best typo I've ever done!
Heh heh!
Did Captain Obvious write this article?
I thought free trade was one of the main things Bezos wanted the Post editorial page to concentrate on.
Explain to me why DEM can't taxes on the rich to pay for Democratic policies that help people????
It's important to assist fascism in its developmental phases. They just want to feel useful like other idiots.
Bezos is such a push over. He didn't even get to wreck the government or be bestie with Trump. Just surrenderedhis dignity to a convicted felon that's not even a billionaire.
A byline-less article is pretty much the opposite of all journalists' stated goals. That's pretty conclusive on the motives of the WaPo.
aaahhhhhh but there are those old nasty Necessary Proper in pursuance thereof clauses not to mention the oath to This Constitution not to the individual with a disability imposed by sec 3 of the 14th to hold the office of President
Great reporting Washington Post. Keep it up 🙄 “In February ‘25 Bezos announced that the opinion pages would focus exclusively on "personal liberties and free markets" leading to the resignation of the Opinion Editor and criticism from prominent figures, including former Executive Editor Marty Baron.
bezos is a pig
most journalists are rather stupid
congress wont approve it. the senate has plenty who will not go along with it
Wapo, helping Trump destroy America.
Trump can put his tariff plan on stronger footing by deferring to the branch of government that has that Constitutional purview... Congress.
What if everything illegal were described like this? “Here’s how Trump can get his immigration policy on a stronger footing—due process.” “Here’s how a thief could get his financial plan on a stronger footing—earn money instead of stealing.”
I do believe many Republicans in Congress will not vote for tariffs, that’s why Team Trump bypassed them. Then again Republicans have given up on a market based economy, they’re all over the map.
The ‘Editorial board’ haven’t realize MAGA don’t read.
Incredible.
Thought I misread, then that this was a joke, then remembered it’s Bezos’ opinion pages that are the joke. Sickening. And feel for the good journos who remain.
This isn’t advice as much as it’s common sense that the Admin is well aware of — they just don’t have the votes. They did the same for Joe Biden with his student loan forgiveness plan in 2022.
Epstein.
Washington Pravda rushes in once more to aid and abet.
unfollow and block WaPo.
Well hello Washington Post Editorial Board. Nice to know that you are fully onboard with the idea that the Emperor is fully clothed.
When news consistently sides with the government, it becomes state media; not news.
The Washington post is the paper representing a city literally under an illegal siege by the government. Can we maybe talk about that?
This is actually very sad.
The NCLA who Leonard Leo backs initially filed the lawsuit against Trump over these tarrifs so Im sorta assuming the Supreme Court would back their boy Leonard Leo on this one .
First I dumped NYT. Next I dumped WaPo. Now, it’s Democracy Docket and … various independent journos.
Same!!
Oh please do, more reason to vote out every GOP in the House and Senate! They don’t care about you MAGA, but MAGA hasn’t infiltrated Bluesky yet like cockroaches infestation of Twitter and Threads so I’m speaking to only those whom already know and will put every effort into gaining back Congress.
Aaaaaaaaaaargh
Give poor Bezos a break. Being at all critical of Donald might interfere with his hot air ballooning while sipping champagne.
What do you want from Jeff Bezos? He needs a bigger helicopter for his megayacht. Criticizing Donald might jeopardize that possibility. Give the poor guy a break.
Trump to Gen Mattis, "Why can't you just shoot them in the legs." Now our military is picking up trash in DC. But this pales in comparison to Military Funeral for Ashlee Babbit. Eventually our military will receive an unlawful order that they'll refuse. When they do, they'll need good lawyers,
The assumption Trump has an agenda is always hilarious to me
The fact that it’s the editorial board and not just some crackpot guest columnist makes it especially appalling. I’m soooo glad I cancelled my subscription last year and put the money towards independent media like Democracy Docket.
I thought Bezos wanted WaPo to be pro-business?
Yeah -- I remain unsubscribed to Wapo and expect to be for the rest of time.
White House Deputy communications director Jeff Bezos says....
Fuck bezos and amazon.
The Washington Post has become a tool for the rich to lie to the poor.
The Washington Post has really really really degraded itself since they refused to endorse a candidate for the election
Whose side are they on, anyway?
Because Jeff Bezos is far more interested in tariffs than in democracy.
BOYCOTT the Washington Post
I was going to say WaPo is doing "activist journalism" but then realized that's only halfway accurate.
FU, @washingtonpost.com
This whole paper is complicit.
Good plan. Force Congressional Republicans to vote for higher prices, now that we all know where they come from!
So economy be damned, it's kiss Trump's ass full speed ahead.
Jeff Bezos’ marching orders - help the fascist tsunami sweep the land. v Fuck him and the rest of the oligarchs!
Oh god, Choppy--yes. YES.
First ask him "Who pays the tarrifs?"
I don't even think these are written by humans anymore, not that the remaining humans in the Post editorial room are anything worth writing home about.
I thought the wapo was for free trade...
Is this the lifestyle stuff or whatever bald ass bezos said the Post would focus on? I’ll be back later. My weekends are for sports when possible. And this weekend it’s possible #godawgs #ynwa
Shameful of the WP…
So much for Bezos’ edict about the Post’s editorial pages championing free markets
It’s officially WAPOOH
Another state regime media message. Independent media only.
Meanwhile a number of postal service companies in various countries are suspending shipments to the US because of the tariffs (not all postal services, but certain companies).
The headline's a lot worse than the article, but while Trump may be able to get Congress to give his current Government-by-Fearless-Leader's-Whims a legal footing the Originalists would have to admit* it doesn't have right now, it's still a bad idea implemented incompetently. * Yeah, right.
Global depression dies in darkness.
That is so screwed up.
My longest ever subscription was to the Post. I've never been happier to cancel a subscription and I've never felt bad about it.
Maybe, but Congress would have to vote on each country and tariff amount which would kneecap Trump's 'political use of tariffs', and his constant changing of tariff limits.
Go ahead and put it a party line vote. That’s how you’re supposed to do it. The question is do you want to get the blame for it? How lucky do you feel?
Exactly. 🎯
That's the thing... he doesn't WANT to go through Congress. Because this isn't actually about the tariffs. It's about wielding unchecked, unquestioned, absolute power.
Amazing how he does the complete opposite of conservative thinking. Here’s Thatcher explaining about tariffs. youtube.com/shorts/ZhtxA...
I wrote this for my die-hard Republican friends and family members prior to the 2024 election. It's all about how Trump is the polar opposite of everything conservatives claim to believe.
JFC
Fuck wash post
I continue my WaPo subscription for Carolyn Hax; once she leaves, so do I.
He already knows this. The goal of the EO was to push the boundary on executive power
Must be awful living in the US right now
To be Fair and Balanced™, Trump's economic damage will be a lot more apparent in 6-12 months. For most of us outside DC area, the awful is currently about our neighbors, friends, and fellow Americans being deported and attacked for both their skin color and for saying politically incorrect things.
Stay as strong and clear headed as you can. Lots of wonderful people in the US
Believe me, it is. A fucking nightmare.
They all know they’re better off if he lets SCOTUS shut him down: he gets out of the inflation pickle he’s put himself in, Congress doesn’t have to go on record voting to raise costs for consumers, and the Court gets to pretend it’s not in his pocket.
Our WP subscription is up next month. We decided to cancel and put the $ toward increasing our support of our local NPR station.
Dispicable.
If the NYT is the first time he’s hearing about this strategy to use legislation to codify his tariffs then his top advisors should collectively pull their bottom lip over their head. And swallow.
The deciding votes in the Senate to Collins and Murkowski. Collins votes "Aye" with severe concerns. Murkowski votes "Aye" and hopes the house can fix the bill. The house passes the bill unaltered.
@washingtonpost.com is still in business???
WTF is wrong with them.
Loser Bezos dictating what his employees post. BOYCOTT THE WASHINGTON POST
I don't regret canceling my subscription to the Post.
What bezos has done to the post is criminal.
It’s now a useless rag.
"It's forbidden to write about anything else than personal liberties and free markets."
does this editorial promote the ideas of "personal liberties" or "free markets?"
Today's front page was stunningly absent any information about the city under siege, the city on its own masthead, but had an above the fold story that was about people disappearing in a world capitol....Mexico City (wtf, read the room WaPo).
In other words, "If Trump followed the law, the courts would have no case."
when has Congress blocked him on anything WaPo???
"Democracy dies in darkness."
Wrong tense
You mean his "illegal" tariff plan. Funny how a WaPo editor would "forget" to include that important word.
Cancel your subscription now. Democracy died in darkness when Bezos bought it. Now it's just a pro-tRUMP rag.
Democracy dies in daylight while we offer assistance
Is the post run by idiot now or are they just in love with trump?
Congress doesn’t want to have to approve the tariffs because that vote can be used against them come the midterms.
These people are unbelievable
Yes the editorial boards job is to help destroy the middle and lower class. Bravo.
Disgusting. Shame on WaPo.
Media lapdogs.
Yes. A roadmap for replicating the disastrous Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act from the sad husk of what was once a great American newspaper.
The Washington Post is a disgrace.
