It might seem like an abstract, academic issue. But law has a significant legitimizing effect. Trump's EOs have the trappings of law and are often treated as law, but frequently come from an illegal process.

The difference between the "law on the books" and law in the real world takes on a different meaning when the President scribbles all over the law books.
Why is Trump worried about votes? He's just going to declare himself president for life.
Dictatorships still like to use the trappings of democracy. Even North Korea has "elections".
As does Russia.
Declaring yourself dictator is unpopular. Manipulating elections can offer an illusion of legitimacy.
Very popular with Trump, though.
Trump makes an incoherent declaration and that lackey Will Shart has to write something down for him to sign
That he 'believes' he gets to decide who votes (ID) and how they vote (in-person) is a bigger problem than it seems. It's not just which form of ballot (paper, electronic) he wants to control. He wants to control the entire voting process and which votes count. Wouldn't be an open vote anymore.
