do y’all consider romantasy and fantasy romance to be the same? is romantasy just the new age term for it?

imo whatever is first is the main component. romantasy=romance is the main aspect, fantasy romance=fantasy is the main thing and the romance is the B-plot.

ehh not quite. fantasy romance as a genre really is a romance set in a fantasy setting. i just wanted to know what romantasy really indicated which seems to be the same just a marketing term for it.

I do think romantasy and fantasy romance are the same. I don’t like the term though because I think it makes it to easy to conflate fantasy romance with romantic fantasy and those are two different genres. I need people to understand that they are different 😭

Yeah, I think Romantasy is the new term for Fantasy Romance. They're both a romance set in a fantasy setting where the romance is a huge part of the story. Romantic Fantasy is more my style because it's a fantasy story with a romantic subplot.

and for those who don’t know, what’s the difference? (asking for a friend) 👀

major difference is that fantasy romance explicitly has a happy ever after/happy for now as a requirement while that does not necessarily apply to romantic fantasy most books that are described as RF also have a heavier focus on worldbuilding, politics instead of the romance being the main focus

Yea I consider it to be the same, my problem is with people who categorize books under romantasy when it's a actually a fantasy with a romance subplot

i think that romantasy is romance as the main focus set in a fantasy world and fantasy romance is the opposite with romance as a subplot

ehhh fantasy romance has always been a romance set in a fantasy world. i feel romantasy is a newer term thrown in the mix that makes ppl think otherwise. i was under the impression they were the same!

i'm so picky about fantasy world building which means i'm picky about genre bending; i think romantasy books are primarily romance books. "fantasy" as a genre is a little vague since the genre is named after the setting and not the plot conventions, which isn't unheard of, but just call it a romance

Yeah, I always understood romantasy as romance in a fantasy setting so the romance is most important, and fantasy romance is the same thing but that’s the rough part about the term because it seems everyone feels differently on it 😅

I’ve heard them used to denote the emphasis being on the fantasy or on the romance. Not sure if that’s the usual though.

I consider my book fantasy with a splash of romance, not the whole thing. So I wouldn’t call mine a romantasy, because it’s not the main focus. Idk if it’s correct or not, tbh 🤣
