A cancelable opinion I have is that deer are over-populated to a ridiculous degree on the East Coast and we should be hunting a lot more of them. Also Hunters For The Hungry is a cool org.

This is just a straight up accurate opinion. Not is rural areas but anything even remotely suburban is way overcrowded with deer and hunting is entirely appropriate way of trying to mitigate things since we eliminated predators out east.

they're overpopulated in most of the US. We really ought to have a federal(or fed sponsored state program) to pay ppl to hunt deer, turn them over to participating butchers, and provide the meat for a slightly below market rate(butcher&hunter get most of the cut).

Absolutely true. I'm told if you see a "browse line" in the trees, they're starving. Thinking about trying it on my own property, to lower the population here. Would be great if I could donate the carcass to people who need the food. I've got step one: the acquisition permit. Unsure about the rest.

Meat is a great, necessary protein source. Ideally, animals live full rich lives before passing on. A lb of hunted deer meat is one less lb of caged livestock...that seems good to me. Trophy hunting is repulsive though.

Oh yeah, trophy hunting is pathetic and gross. The real hunters I know take pride in limiting suffering and using what they shoot. If they can't eat it all, they donate it.

Over-populated in the places that you can't hunt them. Urban archery programs should be expanded. I have four on my property now that could be safely removed. This is not suitable habitat. I saw two barely make it across four lanes this morning.

Deer are wildly over populated. My wife was a field biologist. Hunter’s moan about lack of deer when less than 60/mi^2, but you need less than 30 deer/mi^2 for forest regrowth and less than 20 for wild flowers. Mature forests with lots of ferns and little undergrowth are not natural.

Mark Denovich @denovich.bsky.social

The difference deer population makes is striking when you see what grows in a deer exclosure: there are flowers, and with flowers there are bugs and birds. So much diversity. The rest of the woods are filled a few over represented species that deer won’t eat.

Also worth noting that hunting licenses and taxes on hunting gear are a significant contributor to conservation efforts. In the Midwest, hunters are on the frontlines of the fight against CWD in local deer populations. They provide incredible amounts of data and samples to help scientists track it.
