A cancelable opinion I have is that deer are over-populated to a ridiculous degree on the East Coast and we should be hunting a lot more of them. Also Hunters For The Hungry is a cool org.

E-mails from an Asshole share.google/IyAkFQo695MW... Reminds me of this classic email prank!
If you understand wild game has never had the protection of veterinary medicine and sure the butcher knows what they're doing, I agree.
Looking at the thread and I'm just... Newsom, okay, I can see why, let's see if it works for you. Shapiro, buddy, yes, you want to appeal to hunters, but not that on that whacko's show. Emmanuel, just what fucking party are you running in the primary for, amigo.
True, and not just for the east coast.
This is just a straight up accurate opinion. Not is rural areas but anything even remotely suburban is way overcrowded with deer and hunting is entirely appropriate way of trying to mitigate things since we eliminated predators out east.
they're overpopulated in most of the US. We really ought to have a federal(or fed sponsored state program) to pay ppl to hunt deer, turn them over to participating butchers, and provide the meat for a slightly below market rate(butcher&hunter get most of the cut).
As much as I loathe to agree, I do. Our forests are dying because they munch all the seedlings. Nobody is really noticing it yet but they will.... www.audubon.org/magazine/sur....
I support it if we also re-introduce wolves.
Becoming a problem where I live in PA because the deer just camp out in the small amount woods between subdivisions, where they can’t be hunted
I feel the same way about Canada Geese in British Columbia
It's remarkable how annoyingly prevalent everyone finds them considering they were almost extinct a century ago
Concur. I live in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. It’s not if you hit a deer, it’s when.
Just look at what happened when Yellowstone brought back wolves.
Yes such a cool story.
Adam Ragusea makes a pretty good case for deer getting shot as opposed to other "natural" deaths www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_uC...
Bring back wolves 🐺
hooved rats
Mystical, sit waiting for deer everything is a deer
Release the woves (hunting to control the population is fine too)
Agreed. Plus venison is delicious and lean, and also hunting is cheaper than the grocery store with much more buck for your bang, if you will.
It doesn't seem that cancelable given that everyone from the Audobon Society to the governments of New York and New Jersey think that deer overpopulation is at a crisis point Surging Deer Populations Are a Crisis for Eastern Forests | Audubon share.google/DEcrQbX325s4...
I mean cancellable in the context of this website because yes
Yeah maybe I'm too midwest-brained for this discussion but I thought this was the common understanding (I'm a vegetarian who has had this conversation with other vegetarians fwiw)
More doe tags
Deer can be invasive and horrible for the plant life in an area. The population must be held under control.
Deer is what they call big rabbits.
yeah, so long as you aren't being unduly cruel and are safe about butchering the carcass, hunting for food is perfectly fine. Honestly it's probably more ethical than eating a cheeseburger for lunch every day of your life
Absolutely true. I'm told if you see a "browse line" in the trees, they're starving. Thinking about trying it on my own property, to lower the population here. Would be great if I could donate the carcass to people who need the food. I've got step one: the acquisition permit. Unsure about the rest.
Way too many deer. Not enough towns allow hunting on conservation land, and there's often not that much other land that's suitable.
Deer are innocent, respectfully
In addition to police and fire departments, we should have mountain lion departments. A few trucks with a bunch of mountain lions in them that drive around looking for deer.
Deer will at your apples but a mountain lion will eat your adam's apple.
Environmentally better to consume as well. And healthier than cow
except for the game of russian roulette with chronic wasting disease?
Meat is a great, necessary protein source. Ideally, animals live full rich lives before passing on. A lb of hunted deer meat is one less lb of caged livestock...that seems good to me. Trophy hunting is repulsive though.
Oh yeah, trophy hunting is pathetic and gross. The real hunters I know take pride in limiting suffering and using what they shoot. If they can't eat it all, they donate it.
Either we bring back wolves/lions or we need to be taking pictures with mountains of deer skulls like they used to do for bison. No other sustainable options.
Hogs too. Good Lord the hogs need to be annihilated.
Bring back the mountain lions!!
Over-populated in the places that you can't hunt them. Urban archery programs should be expanded. I have four on my property now that could be safely removed. This is not suitable habitat. I saw two barely make it across four lanes this morning.
But what if... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/America...
Also, bring back mountain lions to the east coast. Insurance companies would approve.
I’m in Northern California and growing up the deer were overpopulated. Since then coyotes and mountain lions have moved in and put them in check. Are there any predators in your area that could serve a similar role?
Anyone else used to get a day off of school for the first day of hunting season? Called: Deer Day
Fuckers keep eating my apple tree! Get off my lawn!
They love fruit trees.
Deer are wildly over populated. My wife was a field biologist. Hunter’s moan about lack of deer when less than 60/mi^2, but you need less than 30 deer/mi^2 for forest regrowth and less than 20 for wild flowers. Mature forests with lots of ferns and little undergrowth are not natural.
The difference deer population makes is striking when you see what grows in a deer exclosure: there are flowers, and with flowers there are bugs and birds. So much diversity. The rest of the woods are filled a few over represented species that deer won’t eat.
As a Central PA resident…yes. Very much yes lol
Hunting also seems way more ethical than getting plowed by SUVs
Or starvation.
The only problem I see is that the IQ of the average deer exceeds the IQ of the average PA hunter. NB: I have personally witnessed a group of hunters encircle a thicket and then begin firing into the thicket.
Also worth noting that hunting licenses and taxes on hunting gear are a significant contributor to conservation efforts. In the Midwest, hunters are on the frontlines of the fight against CWD in local deer populations. They provide incredible amounts of data and samples to help scientists track it.
My family's in the PA suburbs of Philly and they are just overrun. The population has exploded since 20 years ago (when deer/car accidents were already a major risk).
Feed the needy and manage the deer population, which kills more motorists in PA then any shark during shark week but that’s bad ratings
