If I was so concerned about this perception, I would simply not embrace the perspective of the people I am so sensitive about being associated with.

I mean he's just not a Republican, dude. You can say you don't like his takes or that his commentary has the effect of being harmful to democrats or helpful to republicans but he advocates for and supports democratic candidates. Just don't lie about him is all.

He needs to be compelled to defend himself. All of the political prognosticator class do. Whatever there their methods, they are subject to criticism and need to stop being defensive about it, but explain, reflect and be able to adjust when warranted. Nate Silver should be a cautionary tale.
