It holds up well. One of the best MCU movies. Cap got a pretty kick-ass trilogy!
I honestly enjoyed this movie more on a rewatch last year than in the theater I put way to much expectation on it at the time and didn't appreciate the period piece nature of it
It has possibly aged better than any of these things? Just knowing that you never really get anything like this again. And there is SO much thought put into every little detail.
I think it has. It's so well made, my only complaint being I wish we got Red Skull used after this movie He's so good he deserves to be more than a one and done
It's weird to say since the sequel to this is regarded as one of the best Marvel movies ever, but it's too bad we couldn't have gotten one more of THESE. Another adventure before Steve goes in the ice would've been great. Hell, an animated series.
Exactly, Winter Soldier is my favorite MCU movie Heck, instead of Civil War if we'd gotten Red Skull in modern day in control of Hydra it would have felt like a proper trilogy
And the larger MCU narrative bits were actually integral to the plot of the film, rather than being tacked on at the end. I feel like that was something that became lost as the MCU expanded and became more interconnected.
I feel like that is something they're still struggling with today
I don’t want to say they lucked into Thanos but the Infinity Stones gave them 7 McGuffins to deal with and most of them were so undefined that the writers could use them however they wanted. The biggest mistake they made was the time travel, parallel universes box they opened.
They’ve spent how many movies and Disney+ series having to deal with this? Kang was supposed to be the big bad at all of that but then that didn’t work. Now they are course correcting to Doom, but of course it isn’t just Doom. So they will spoil that as they try to fix what they broke in Endgame.
My recollection is that Hugo Weaving was not super easy to work with on this one? Unfortunate, because I really enjoy his performance.
Man, Stanley Tucci and Tommy Lee Jones - this movie has some great supporting performances, too.
The whole lab set where they transform Steve looks SO good. There's a reason that big refrigerator pod opening up is one of the iconic Marvel movie shots.
Speaking of looking great - the submersible vehicle the Nazi spy tries to escape in is just *chef's kiss* This movie gives some real Batman: TAS vibes at times in the best way. And moreso than any live action Batman ever has!
I missed this previously, but there's a callback to this movie in Endgame - in both instances someone suggests a direct, head-on approach to an incredulous audience and Steve says, in this one, "That's exactly what we're going to do." In Endgame I think it's "Yeah, just like that" to Carol.
I know some people like the Captain Carter thing (I do not!) but Peggy has NEVER been cooler than this movie where she's wearing a kick-ass leather jacket and blowing away Nazis with a machine gun. Like come ON.
Her show was underrated.
I only ever watched the first season, but I'm going to tackle the whole thing soon.
Second season is looser and the retro sci-fi is weirder, but it’s still pretty good.
Some really wonderful moments in that show. Dotty’s fight reveal lives rent free in my head.
Oh yeah, for real. The crackling platonic chemistry between Peggy and Jarvis is what made me watch the whole thing twice.
In case anyone's wondering, the scene of Steve sacrificing himself while Peggy is on the radio absolutely still chokes me up.
This is my favorite MCU movie as of the time it was released - I'm ranking it higher than Iron Man or Iron Man 2, which surprises me!
So many great little choices. Zola’s horrified delayed hail. The painter’s life-saving relief at Zola’s review. Eating Zola’s lunch. Wow I guess I really love Zola!
He is an amazing little worm in this movie.
After his Winter Soldier appearance I had hoped he would pop up in later movies, as an ineffective virus, just being an annoyance running gag. He only came back in a What If. :(
CA:TWS will change it but in the first film Zola is just an overzealous scientist that realizes that he’s teamed up with a megalomaniac. A lot of his actions are simply defined by self preservation.
I recall that he was not a fan of the extensive makeup he had to wear, which probably made him more of a grump than usual.
Whenever I hear anyone was “hard to work with” at Marvel Studios, I question who said so, and what they consider difficult. Except Edward Norton. Guy’s got a reputation as a jerk all over town.
I love this movie and yes, Johnston really was a great director for that. I would have liked at least another WW2 era Cap movie with the Howling Commandos.
Would've LOVED that.
Rock solid cast and the tone and feel of the movie are spot on. And that war bonds song is a real ear worm. The Cap movies are the ones I rewatch the most in the MCU, especially the first two.
It’s a Top 10 MCU movie. I dare say it even qualifies as being UNDER appreciated.
It has aged extremely well, too - I'd agree that it's under appreciated!
