I feel pretty strongly that gerrymandering is the reason we get so many freaks in politics. Make a district competitive and maybe you’d have to actually be qualified to win. Way oversimplified, but seems right

And so many folks who don’t talk to their constituents or make any effort to do anything but vote party line. In TN, there are a handful of reps that actually listen, even to folks outside their district. Every single one of them is a democrat. The republicans don’t bother.

IT IS. The primaries reward the more extreme candidate—the gerrymandering ensures these extremists will win the election. Anyone can see how difficult it is to have even a functioning society to have minority rule by extremists. How can anyone defend that? Even a conservative should oppose it.

You're not wrong. Guaranteed party dominance in districts means that all a candidate has to do is survive the primary/caucus, and since the primaries/caucuses have been left up to the fandom (toxic or otherwise), all that candidate has to do is play to the fandom and the money.
