Is the art of replaying videogames dying? I get we get tons and tons of new videogames every week... but there are still many that REALLY mean something or are special to me that will get them a replay, or revisit every year or so. I know we can't replay everything though.
You know what kills me, dude? I waited so unbelievably long for a follow-up to Metroid Fusion, and I have still only played Dread once despite loving every moment with it. I too have gotten caught up in the new release cycle, and want to make time for revisits.
DREAD IS SO GOOD... at least it's not SUPER long though. But yeah. Sometimes it's nice to step back and take a break from the new releases and either go back to stuff you put down or replays!
And I really want to get better at it. 😅
There are just so many games now that it's impossible to even keep up on the ones that I'm interested in, it makes it hard to make the time to replay. Even with that though, there are some games that I absolutely make the effort to replay, newer and classic games.
There are some I would love to replay but I just don't have the time anymore.

One of the nice things about remasters is it kind of makes replaying a classic easier... but honestly, some games are just so amazing I try to get access to it whenever there's a new generation :)

I've finished 2 BG3 runs in the last 2 weeks and nearly finished a 3rd lol. I play through the Mass Effect trilogy at least once a year. I'll do replays of soulsborne games every so often.
I still replay games because I don't like paying $80 for new ones unless they're worth it. And if they're worth it, I play them forever 😁

Resident Evil and Silent Hill games I go back to fairly frequently as they are relatively short (especially during spooky season) I've also finished Persona 5/Royal 4 times in total too, play it roughly once every 2 years That being said though I don't remember replaying anything yet this year
Uhh.. well. I have over 1.1k hours in bg3.. so I would say no. But some people are involved in mass consumerism when it comes to video games. Backlog of games.. I mean I’m a victim of backlogging 🤣 BUT my reason is bc I do replay games bc they’re a comfort. I go back to what I love most
I also have games that I replay every once in awhile. For example: sly cooper 2 and legend of Zelda: twilight princess. I never get bored of those. And then I’ll do a new Skyrim save even though I know I should go back to the save I already have. That game is a continuous loop 😂
My entire relationship with vid3o games is based on it at this point. It is very alive with me haha! I think its unique to the individual; but imagine its down overall given the variety and cheap access now.

Not here, my year in review this year will likely be the same games I played the year before lol I have maybe one more 2025 game I’m anticipating, the other two I’m mostly excited for don’t have release dates so I’m debating when to back their founder packs.
For me, it’s a comfort thing. Nothing better than revisiting a favorite game after a tough time!

It’s definitely time for me! I have a lot of games and I truly don’t have the time to go back- and I don’t even buy new games unless it’s something I really want. E33 I got bc of fomo but I am glad I did otherwise I probably wouldn’t have played it
Honestly, I've gone back to replaying classics rather than play bug-ridden new titles over the last five years.
I believe part of the reason is that we're constantly flooded with new games on a regular basis. It contributes to fomo and people obsessed with clearing their "backlog".
Def a part of it. I think for me, I'm much more able to either a.Drop a game after a few hours going, nope. I'm good. b. finishing a game, acknowledging it was great, but won't ever replay againa and moving on. C. The ones that click and really make a impact. Those stick with me.

I pretty much only play "old" or "older" games. Some I have played through many, many times.

Same. I replay games every year. Sometimes an entire playthrough, sometimes a dip of a toe to get some nostalgia... but I crave to find those special games.
Yep! I either do a full replay or just a short revisit. Because more often than not I'm craving a quick feeling/session with the game, but can't commit to whatever the length is.
This is actually why I sort of LOATH 50+ hour games. Those games, it would take them being VERY special for me to every replay them all the way through. A 10-15 hour game. Way easier. Its why I've replay countless RE game, Uncharted, and some other favs that are short again and again!
Opposite for me here, shorter/linear titles are usually one and done especially if I feel like I checked boxes and achievements (Indiana Jones recently), but like others said above a BG3, or WOTR regardless of length I’m coming back to sooner or later.
Yeah it all depends on the game and the story and my vibe with it really regardless. I'm just way more pickier with what long long games I will replay cause takes more time away from everything else.
Makes sense yeah, I just rotate in and out of different ones and don’t try to fixate too long. I play some here or there more than others but for the longer RPGs I tend to pick them up and run through x amount and then save and come back later, it varies.
Looks at himself replaying gen 3 pokemon for the Umpteenth time... Nope, still burning strong in me sir... But at the same time, i just play what i want so there's also that main focus 🤣
If I love a game I'll replay it again. But I do think people replay less bc we have so many options.

I think it’s mostly a thing with the newest games. There’s like a window for that and NG+. I don’t do much of either these days.

Exactly this! It's why for example I've replayed RDR1 many time, but RDR2 only twice so far.
Know that I say this with a smile and fond memories: LOL NO! I have thousands of hours logged in Civilization, Terraria, Minecraft, Destiny, and others. I played through Breath of the Wild 4 times, Horizon: Zero Dawn twice. Procedural generated maps, open world, and choice-driven stories are great!
I have such a backlog of games but every now and then I make time to go back through some of my personal favorites like Wild Arms 2 (ps1 jrpg), the Metal gear solid series, and cyberpunk 2077. I also hit Pokémon blue/yellow every now and then on phone emulators too 😅

I know some people tend to play a game once, but I think it depends on the person and the game. Any RPG with multiple endings or choices and consequences, I end up replaying. Not immediately back to back cause I don't wanna burn myself out, but eventually later on.
yeah same for me. the only exception to this rule was bg3. where i beat it... back...to back....to back...... to back... in 2 months... my job gives me 2 months free time during the year and it just happened to overllap bg3 release lmao

oh yeah. i'm a utter fool for CRPGs specially in the forgotten realms type settings. pathfinder wrath is one of my top games as well along with bg3. but bg3 is the only game i've sunk 400 hours in that quick. besides a mmo
I look back at some games and their play length and it breaks me because my free time and attention span isn't what I used to be.
I’m 50 so I play a lot of retro games, like I still love to get frustrated going up stairs in Castlevania 3 or starting over on Final Fantasy 6 after some time away. I’ve got the new switch and play through of Nintendo games in between Mario Cart World

I don't think so. I replay games all the time, trying to recapture or remember the impact I felt the first time through. Also I'm a very insecure person and knowing exactly what's coming and how to deal with it makes for a much less stressful experience for me
Well the industry is just remastering and remaking everything anymore...so I guess a lot of people are replaying games but shelling out 2-3 times the original price
While there is a lot of remasters and remakes, there is still way more new games, new ips, or sequels really.
I don't disagree on that point either! There have been some fantastic new titles this year - but quite a lot of the remake/remaster stuff in the last few years.

All I used to do was replay my favorites, and only get abput 2 bew games at a time. I'm trying to balance it out with my insane backlog for now, but I believe I can get back there.
Just the last two years I've replayed Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect Andromeda, Rage, Horizon Zero Dawn, and yes even Dragon Age The Veilguard. Also working on the Mass Effect games and the Spyro games through the remaster collections.
And I'm replaying The Outer Worlds to get ready for the sequel. Almost forgot about that one.
I've replayed a few of my games, I would replay more if I had more time. I always try to set up an annual replay but I never follow through.
I have a Rebirth playthrough going on right now (5th time) and plan in going through Remake again on Switch 2 (8th time) :)
I definitely replay games a lot less than I used to just because of the sheer amount of choice and options these days with subscriptions and sales etc… But saying that a good replay of a game I love heals the soul

I do replay a game every now and then but just like my actual time to play it has gone way down thanks to life circumstances.
I think it really just depends. It's fine to revisit stories and I have a routine with certain dev companies where I play a game as I myself would choose the options and then completely 180 those choices on a next, immediate playthrough. Lol. I go back to comfort RPGs quite frequently, though.
