As books are burned & banned, it’s important that all of U.S. history is forever amplified and not hidden. The holiday season meant something very different for American slaves, my ancestors. ibw21.org/reparations/...

I had no idea about this. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this educational material.
How many are trying to erase and deny would be the same people who would say the holocaust never happened. History is history one can not simply put their fingers I their ears or their head in the sand and say it never happened!.
My students read about this New Year's Day abomination in Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Education is key!
This “dual citizenshttt-ish” f’Elon is taking American tax Payers money and are currently building car factories in red China with those funds‼️🤬‼️🤬 Be alert and of sober mind. Americans are building the enemy’s Workforce. “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
The Congress under 14.3 must do their job‼️ And the Supreme Court, in their skewed opinion , cannot say otherwise. It also takes 2/3 of the Congress to override the Supreme Court Ruling Scott v Sanford (yeah boys, Dread-Scott Slavery is a Thing) ->> it’s an example of the Court getting it Wrong🇺🇸
Rough to read but important to know and acknowledge. Thanks for sharing and happy new year
Pure evil. I don't know how anyone could think it's anything else.
📌
Look up the Barbra Streisand effect.
Very informative. thank you for posting
Thank you for sharing some history I did not know.
Thanks for sharing☺️
Thank you for posting. Like many others, this was new for me. Please keep the articles coming.
I did not know about this. Thank you for sharing.
🥴
....
Thanks for posting this. Learning on BlueSky. . .
😥
The foundation of this country was fractured from the beginning. Taking land from the Indigenous people, genocide, taking their kids to boarding schools. Compounding that with slavery and the fight for Civil Rights. It’s gonna take a lot to repair the damage. Book burning is NOT the answer. 📚🔥😡
Was there a sales tax on slaves?
Thanks for sharing. I’d heard about the origins for black people but hadn’t seen it spelled out like this before. So important to share all of our history and not only the parts that make certain people feel good.
Thank you for this. Somehow left out of my history book.
I never knew about this. It’s a shame what we were never taught. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing this truth. I never heard of this. 😢
I'd stay well away if I were you
What do you mean by this?
Stay away from the offer by the person in the post beneath
Thank you for sharing this truth that must be told and taught in our history classes. This is heartbreaking.💔😡
We treated black people as though they were animals, and there are some who wish that practice could become law again. It's not part of our history that we should be proud about, but the story must continue to be told lest we forget. Southern people still think they won that war.
Thank you for this enlightening article! The reason others are kept illiterate, is so there are few if any records left behind of the atrocities that were/are perpetrated.
Damn.
An excellent record of our history is found on the podcast "History That Doiesn't Suck," hosted by Greg Jackson.
I don't care
I’m a direct descendant of John Alden of Pilgrim fame. He participated in the Thanksgiving slaughter of the natives, the real story of the holiday. The history I learned was bullshit. “When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school it’s a wonder I can think at all.” (Paul Simon)
I don’t know that I ever heard of New Year’s Day as hiring day for slaves. I will look at the day through a different lens from now on. We cannot let this history be destroyed by those who want to whitewash the past rather than learn from it so we can do better.
I've never understood why Blacks celebrate the 4th of July. Freedom as lost that day and it should be a day of mourning.
Knowledge is power.
Shameful
Thank you for sharing...
Book banning… right up there on the christo facist list of idiocy. Damn ! People are stupid. (And getting stupider doing stuff like this)
If you were to draw a Venn diagram to include those people who scream loudest about "cancel culture", and those who want to supress these aspects of US history, you would only need one circle.
We're taught so little so they can pretend that there's something to be proud of 😢
Thank you!. I can Remember, reading about this many years Ago..Good to reflect on those times n what took place on JAN One. My 88-year-old mom always say that saying whatever you do on New Year’s Day that’s what you’ll be doing all year. Now I know the meaning behind that saying ,thanks for sharing.
Agreed. Little known history fact. Same can be said for July 4th and reason why butter pecan is the preferred flavor of black Americans…
I've never heard that about the flavor. Why is it favored, besides being delicious?
On my great great grandmother’s plantation, “massa” would sic the dog on them if four or more of them congregated. So they would put bread or something similar in their pocket and feed the dog where he’d become docile. That’s where the phrase “Hush Puppy” came from.
Thanknyou got the history that was not taught to so many.
Heartbreaking
A true statement it should be taught in all schools to enlighten us about the past, and reminds us of what can happen in the future
It's a heartbreaking story and a part of history that I'm sure few are aware of. Thanks for sharing.

I'm writing one that will no doubt be banned once published... he won't like it lol
I can't understand how anyone could hear a mother crying out for her stolen children and not see their humanity. Just evil.
Have you been to a local library lately? Ours are bereft of history books, especially those written at the time of the events they are about. Why? The librarians said the books have been replace by "newer, more accurate books" … The same things happened in Russia prior to the Russian Revolution.
Excellent read. I'm filing it under my very large "I had no idea..." folder.
😪
The real history of humanity is an example of oppression, injustice, and tyranny. We could take these facts and realize. Thus changing the path of civilization. Our own ignorances obstruct the way.
Yes, unimaginable what far too many millions went through, and today the hate persists. Better, but not completely free.
Thank you for this. I never knew.
May every generation of every last slave owner be damned forever. I try very hard to make things better, but, alas, I am one, too. So, I carry my damnation and beg your forgiveness. Vote to make yourselves free. I did.
📌
Keep reminding people that these books, removed from libraries by the ‘forces of the Right’, are still readily available EVERYWHERE ELSE like at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Books, and all of the publishers, on-line, and are storable on our phones, tablets, and computers.
Utter failure of the US education system that this isn’t more widely known. If history makes you uncomfortable, great, you will be less likely to repeat and do better. Knowing the uncomfortable things of our past is not a bad thing, stop being afraid…talking to you anti-woke mob.
Care and wish the GOP had any respect for history .
📌
I never knew this. :-(
Thanks for the history lesson.
Thank you for sharing this. 💔
😢🤬
I never knew. Thank you for the lesson.
politicalamericans.com/high-schools...
Good one! We used to do student hosting for A fine arts camp. The young German dancers were so Impressed with western culture. But the Russians and Japanese were already there! Money talks
A Native mother & her child are also pictured. It became common for the genocidal land-thieving invaders to massacre tribes & falsely accuse them of murder. Surviving women & teens were shipped to Haiti to become slaves. Infants & children up to 12 yr olds were "indentured" meaning killed in private
Thank you for sharing this—it means a lot.
💔💔💔💔
Yes!
I didn’t know this, so I appreciate the information..although appalling.
Fuck
Wow. I'm sorry to hear that, I didn't know.
I lived in Louisiana for about a year. The feeling I got was that the history is like a family secret that isn’t brought up but everyone’s aware of
Yes, how America forgets 😑 umm
I never knew this! Thanks for the article.
Wow, I wasn’t aware of this! Thanks for sharing
Now we are slaves to the system. Jesus came to free us
Thank you 💙
The history of slavery was never taught in the U.K. so I learned late and slowly and I never knew this. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. One more sad injustice in our history. ☹️
📌
While some things have changed, some have stayed painfully the same. That's a fact that I am ashamed of. I hope for better some day.
I will never understand how people just normalized the treatment of other people like property. It must have been so bizarre and scary to live then.
It's still normalized. "Back then" it was enforced primarily with weaponry. Today, it's enforced with more equal parts weaponry and money. Ask a homeless person if they feel they're treated like a person. Ask a Black or indigenous person, or a trans person.
It's shifted more to the prison system these days.
For profit prisons, for profit healthcare, for profit churches, billionaires beware we are all waking up !
Yep, that part of slavery is still Constitutionally legal.
Oklahoma state penitentiary runs a furniture factory with convict labor. I bet that they aren't even paid $1 per hour.
Much less than that actually.....not even $1 per day. But $.54 per hour for "special projects."
Many southern States passed vagrancy laws that was another form of slavery. Chain gang prison labourers
I like standup comedy because it's so great when it comes to storytelling.... Ali Siddiq relays his experience in prison really well with laughs for days. youtu.be/8j9NiWBWtTA?...
I’m truly sorry…I wasn’t aware of this.
Banned books make great gifts anytime!
This is chilling. I had never heard New Year's being referred to as Heartbreak, or Hiring Day - nor what we cheerfully call Hogmanay, Watch Night. Thank you for posting.
📌
The innate cruelty is so hard to accept 😢
Thank you. I’m 76, was raised in the south and never knew that. Not even in college history.
This is one of the worst things I’ve ever read
Another bot post. I swear at this point 99% of all interactions on Blue Sky are block engagement farming at this point.
This makes me so sad. I have never understood how people were and still are so cruel.
How good it is that we are told such things.
Thank you for educating us about this. I read the linked article--heart-breaking.
Or British. Don't forget the genocider Churchill. www.goodreads.com/book/show/30...
The English and their Scottish lairds didn't stop at the hielans.
Which books are banned and burned by the government?
A country that can't acknowledge its past can't rise above it.
It’s such a hideous stain on the history of humanity . The UK is littered with mansions all built on the profit of free labour and cruel exploitation. But it wasn’t just the rich profiting from misery . David Olosugo made a brilliant TV programme “Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners” worth a watch.
Thank you for sharing this.
Horrific. Everyone needs to know this.
Thank you for sharing this. 💖
Picture doesn't load.
Happy New Year. For Some.
How disgusting and awful. They tell us we need to get over it. We will never forget what they did to our ancestors!
📌
Heartbreaking
Thanks for sharing this - I had no idea. You're right - it is important! I'm pretty disgusted about all the things that were conveniently left out of our history classes.
Who knew New Year’s Day was dreaded by the American slave; now for some it’s a time of drunken revelry or blissfully being in mind altering smoke; and my ignorance! Shame!
💯👍
But I don't want to be sad. 😓🤨🤔
👏👏👏👏👏
I'm sorry that we are too cowardly to face who we are & have been - & so have no hope of healing - more than one person said to me 'why should we read CRT? why should we be uncomfortable?' because we did these things & made other humans very uncomfortable - we need to understand it to stop doing it
I am ashamed of our history not truly being taught. I am ashamed that some people in our country think slavery was job training. I am ashamed the US refuses to admit its racist, xenophobic, genocidal origins.
Desantis and the FL republicans 😡
Stop the felon. Sign and share.
If the electoral collage looses the right to vote for Trump, does that give Harris the presidency ?
I don't know the answer, but it would certainly make sense. 💙
The 1619 Project should be required reading.
Never heard this before. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you for teaching so we all can know.
Thank you for sharing this, heartbreaking information to say the least.
The rest of the world has copies, don’t you worry!! Your history will not be forgotten no matter how much rich white men want it!
As hard as the White Christian Evangelical Republican Nationalists try to impede the history of these United States 🇺🇸 the US Library of Congress has copies of books that these fools believe make the suburbanites and their children cry. Tough shit !
Banning books is the path of ignorance just exactly what dictatorship wanted
Very interesting tidbit of Yank history. It's strange though to see that the practice was only conducted on one day though. In Greece, that was standard practice all year. A question, the article stated that it was what the White slave owners did; Why not slave owners of all epidermal hues?
There largely weren't nonwhite slave owners in the U.S. during that time period. There largely weren't nonwhite free people in the U.S. during that time period. The vast majority of dark-skinned people arriving in the U.S. during that time period were shipped in by the trans-atlantic slave trade.
Those white slave owners were also *extremely* racist, and those beliefs were reinforced by the inhumane treatment of the visually distinct black slave class.
That's interesting that you would put it that way; That members of the White races were "Racist" against those of the Black races. That's only because I believed that the dominant belief during those days of slavery, were that members of the Black races were actually another species entirely.
That they were more akin to animals than to Homo-Sapiens. I could understand Racism between the white races, like the Germanics, Romanics and Slavs being against
each other but for them to be "Racists" against the Black races, that sounds a bit to progressive for back then. That would almost equate to,,, well equality. The elevation of the beast to sentience.
However, that would have to be with the Pion groups of the White races because the aristocracy had very close relationships with Arab and African slave owners. They ever had close relationships with American slave owners that descended from African races.
All regardless of the demographic/racial consistency of American and Colonial Slave owners. So my question on this point still remains. Why was it practiced on just one day a year and by those of White skin color.
Article source: time.com/5750833/new-...
Also, why were slaves that resisted going to a new owner, even for a year, thrown into prison. Again in Greece, being enslaved itself was a being in prison. Why wouldn't the slave be "in prisoned" within their new owners,,, ownership?
Rhetorical question or do you really not understand the difference between a jail cell and forced labor?
Ah, I see. You must have received your education in the U.S., or you're a child. Very well. When someone is a slave, their existence is that of a prisoner. A cell is simply where they're housed when not serving. So putting a slave in Jail, would be a reprieve from serving.
Yes, it technically would be a reprieve from "serving", as you call it. It also makes it harder for them to escape or plot revolution, which the American slavers suspected slaves of constantly. It's fundamentally a demoralization tactic where the threat of being isolated and imprisoned was used to
help coerce them into performing the forced labor, as the threat of more forced labor is not very effective at coercing someone to perform that same forced labor. It's far from the only or worst demoralization tactic used. And yes, I am an American and we covered this particular subject in great
detail. We even have various museums devoted to explaining all the particular details of how slavery worked in the U.S.
Now if they would have put that in the article, I wouldn't have needed to pose the question. So it was what we call contemporarily, Sequestered Confinement. Sequester them from all human contact till they start to go mad. Got it.
It seems a bit extreme for something, as slight of a problem, as Slave Revolts though. I assume that that punishment was used more on the newly enslaved, in stead of it being a wide spread practice.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn something new today.
You sound rather racist love
Thank you for sharing. The truth needs to be told in order for all of us can have reconciliation.
I did not know this *at age 50* about New Year’s Day in America. Reposting, with the hope that we can one day soon rebuild the education system into what it always should have been in this country. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing this, especially at a time where some are attempting to erase important history like this.
OMG! This is another historical fact I didn't know. I travel North America and have learned so much about white written history vs. truth. Native American history is also quiet nightmarish. Thank you.
Dr. NH, Agree,TY📖Many of us grew up in the belly of the beast. And fortunate to have escaped poverty, racism, war etc. As painful as history can be in America & other corners of the 🌎, important to protect archives. 💕Bio Harriett Tubman & NA 📘Empire of Summer Moon 🌟📚👏 Internet Archive archive.org
Thank you for adding this. I had no idea.
There is so much I didn't know. The way our school systems gloss over slavery in America is absolutely criminal. I will continue to learn and even more importantly, make sure my grandchildren are informed of the truth of our Country's shameful history.
That’s so horrifying I don’t know how to respond without sounding trite. There are no words.
Make sure a xecent number of books land in every other nation.
How tragic and cruel.
I can't connect to that site
❤️
Americans seem to prefer to not remember US history. If they did, they'd remember being humiliated by trump's "For Russia" NATO steel an aluminum trade war.
The men who seek to hide this shame are the very same as the men who carried it out.If you are ashamed of something then you hid it and pretend it didn't happen. The Black experience in America is like none other. For today many Black people look into their White relatives eyes unknowingly or not 🤔
The first slaves were the native people. But african slaves had the advantage of not arriving with a supportive community, as well as being more different in appearance.
I won't dignify that with a comment
You just did. Native slaves were so badly treated that few survived. Another reason why African slaves were imported. Natives further from the East coast were largely spared by imported African slaves. Why there are almost no native people on the East coast, once having a large native population.
Right On Black Relative, woke is woke is woke, of this I know not else…
Knowledgeable is knowledgeable is knowledgeable. You can’t hide the past.
No you can't and that is why so many rich White Privileges men have a problem with it. Ie Tulsa,Oklahoma www.neh.gov/article/1921...
I was never taught about that horrific event in school, and only learned about it maybe 10 years ago. How many other important parts of our history was I not taught about???
The U.S. Army giving Native American people blankets deliberately infested with smallpox as they were herded off to reservations is another horror I was not taught in school.
Sad but true the Government objective was to get the land by any means necessary and they got the land.
Hi sadly what we pass off as history is basically a Hollywood version of History. They leave these stories out on purpose because in my opinion are ashamed to put it in the history books. www.britannica.com/topic/list-o...
Yes, it is a very sanitized version. And I think we can't have a genuine reckoning with the multi generational trauma that still affects this country deeply until we tell the truth about what happened, and continues to happen.
Well you hit upon a key problem in my opinion. Racism is America Achilles heel and until we honestly face it the country will never heal. Some say well I'm not Racist so why do I have to worry?Putin exploit out Racist tendencies through Donald Trump against us.Now we have a convicted felon President
Denying that racism exists is one of the key ways that the system keeps racism in place. I'm no expert, but from what I've heard the truth and reconciliation commissions in South Africa helped them heal & move forward after the end of apartheid and I think something like that could be helpful here.
T&R Commissions could have been the right answer, but here we were too busy enacting ‘black codes’, segregation-‘separate but un-equal’ SC rulings, Jim Crow laws, institutional racism, voting poll taxes, voting literacy tests, etc. Literally, foot-dragging and fighting against the needed solutions.
Thank you for providing this important historical context, and a chance to grow from it. Much love in the coming New Year.🙏🏼💕
Thanks for sharing this piece of history. I had no idea. I hope that one day the world will see every human being as equal; as it should be.
We actually have a pretty awful history. Worst was the genocide of the Native Americans. One of my ancestors came over from Ireland between 1800 and 1833. Was immediately placed in the army where he deserted. My family thinks was disgraceful. But all the army was doing is kill Native Americans.
I just finished The Tide Between Us, it's historical fiction, but it actually tells how 10,000, Irish orphans were sent to Jamaica as indentured servants. Highly recommend.
It will probably make me mad. If you read the history of Ireland, it is all about unconscionable oppression of Ireland by the English. Read about the Penal laws. Like my nephew says: I hate what the English half of me did to the Irish half of me. it is all history.
It will, but I learned so much about the relationships they fostered, and why so many Jamaicans have Irish names. The oppression is something too many people forget
Like Bob Marly? But I think his father was a Scotsman.
I feel that we're entering Fahrenheit 451 territory...
My god, had no idea. Fuck public schools for not telling providing this context.
Generations of injustice... still here, but this time, sans sheep's clothing... #slaverbrains right out in the open...
Thank you SO much for helping educate America and the world about ALL of America. I am doing what I can to do the same. God bless our cause. 🕯️
The illegal overthrow of the Nation of Hawai'i's monarchy by sugar cane Barron's and American Marines needs to be taught.
Indeed. I did not know the real history of the Hawaiian islands until I visited. I envision a resurgence of native government.
What I hope for. Hawaiian Immersion Schools have really promoted accurate history, cultural teachings and the Hawaiian language. They started in the 90's. It is beautiful to hear 20+ year olds speaking O'leo, fluently.
The preschoolers conversing in it. The kids helping their parents and grandparents learn it, there was a loss for about 2 decades because of the missionaries outlawing it.
History is a learning tool! It gives us the opportunity to learn for ourselves just how brutal mankind can be to human beings! Caesar fed Christian’s to the lions, Christian’s today: demonize the other and approve of horrible acts upon others!
Fascinating, and chastening, too. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for posting this. I never knew about this practice
Thank You For Sharing This Information On Slavery And The History Of Watch Night In The Black Church. ✊🏽
Reckoning with history isn’t about blame it’s about building a future that learns from it. Are we ready to face the answers?
I thought this was good to know, but when I posted it on my Facebook I got zero notices. Normally I get 20-30
Which reminds me to store away my old history books for the time when REAL history will be able to be taught once again in schools.
This horrible part of our history needs to be taught in every single high school in the country.
We have the internet now! We can use TikTok etc. Go where they are.
I still can't believe the horror that was slave-owning America. The horrors we inflicted on innocent people from 1619-1865. 246 years of physical violence, sexual violence, and denying the humanity of tens of millions. Ripping a child from their mother for profit is unconscionable.
👁️👃🏼👁️
I just learned about this the other day. I wish ALL history was taught in "history" classes! Thank you for the post & the reminder that we NEED to know ALL the history, not just what is whitewashed... Those who don't LEARN from history DAMN US ALL to keep repeating it!
Thank you for sharing this missing piece of US history.
