you see this a lot in MFA types: the idea that you have to pursue the varieties of human experience to provide fodder for your stories. what better way to spend your friend's dying year than in an endless drug-fueled death orgy.

In all seriousness though, I think actually experiencing life *is* good fodder for being a writer. But I think the advice as given and interpreted is "Go be a tourist of life", which I think is catnip for narcissists. Which uh, this person *very clearly* is.
