You're assuming that weirdos are more likely to enagage in abuse, rather than simply more likely to get caught.

I'd go so far as to say that abuse by loved ones increases toleration of weirdos by weakening the association between people who are consistently pleasant to be around & people you care for

"propensity to interpret strange behavior as nonthreatening" is a character trait whose utility varies with the amount of strange behavior which is nonthreatening

it is more of a challenge than I'd have expected to tune one's radar such that harmless eccentric behavior and abusive tendencies are appropriately bifurcated

I can see the part of the former that turned into the latter, isn’t Urbit Moldbug’s anarcho-monarchist system?

Growing up and being told to fit the mold made it way easier to say, "I like people who don't fit the mold"

Probably. Live-and-let-live people do seem hesitant to impose their worldview on others and seek to understand before judging. Everything in life is a matter of degrees

A large part of tolerance to weirdos is protecting them from abuse.
