i think it's the Appalachian thing, but it's so fascinatingly weird to see a guy singing about white-guy buddhism in the same devotional mode you might see at a snake-handling church

I had this album at the time and liked it a lot and I think it is unfairly maligned because of how histrionic and omnipresent "Lightning Crashes" was. I seem to remember the rest of the album being more like this, hard rock stuff, etc.

Biased bc Līve was my favorite band for quite a bit of my childhood and teens, but to this day I'm still impressed with The Distance To Here. It completely works as a mainstream rock album but is explicitly about a deep, feverish quest for nirvana. Nothing else quite like it, imo.
