HER book was awesome!
HER book was awesome!
💪👍
Booksies ❤️
Books take you to other places, when you can’t leave where you are.
Yes I absolutely adored the diary of Anne frank for this reason
The texture of the paper. The rustling of the page, the smell of the book. Letting you imagination run wild. Nothing is more satisfying.
Right on!
The one thing I was excited to learn in first grade was to READ! It’s been my consistent joy for nearly seven decades. Highly recommend it.
I love my Nook and Kindle, but there is NOTHING like holding a paper and bound book, as I'm curled up in a corner with an afghan and my cat.
Books might contain the last residues of the truth. The ones that do will be declared subversive. The electronic world is too easily modified, corrupted or erased.
I like my Kobo e-reader because I can easily enlarge the text to make it easier for me to read without having to search for a “large print” version.
She's right, at least regarding something produced by humans.
Agree.
I find that books do not run out of battery power, much easier on the eyes, do not get hacked, and are reliable. Information in books does get old and may need to be replaced. They don't play well with moisture. They are quiet.
Books activate different parts of our brain. I think it's like watching a movie vs dreaming. Both present a story but they are different experiences.
I am saddened when I see that reading for pleasure has dropped significantly. I see reading as a necessity for sanity.
If you go home with somebody, and they don't have books, don't fuck 'em! —John Waters
Holding something tangible in your hands, reading, using your on imagination, it’s priceless. Thanks Cat for the reminder!
Libraries are the coolest, most socialist things we've ever created. They're dirt cheap, easy to maintain, use unneeded books from its members, have a host of free or cheap programs, and even computer labs. Can we get advertisements for Samuel L Jackson hyping up libraries? They have free wifi.
Facts!!!!
SO agree 💯 open.substack.com/pub/noelkeit...
WORD.
Phones, tablets, newspapers, just don't cut it sitting in the can. Books are the best, one hand hold or both hands. Amazing how time flies.
True enough! books are so tactile.
I bet you read all about your racist bigoted ancestors on there and forget about your yt privilege
Clay tablets were the bomb a while back. Hell, I would read them if I could carry them home. Imagine the shelving needed. Hmmm, how would clay work on the back of a cereal box?
Never. I love books. 🥰
I will never, ever buy an e-reader. I love my books.
Just finished the Philosopher and the Druid and starting We Are Satellites next. No singular genre can hold me!
Patti doesn’t live in reality
I will say that books, even “serious literature,” need more illustrations or photographs.
I love books and am an avid reader. Still, they are modern technology and general availability is a very recent development. The original way, stories being told, is my preferred way.
Which book Patti? 🤔😂
I’m a nerd geek whatever you want to call me, I love technology and what’s its brought to the world, however if you ever see me reading, whether that at the coffee shop or on the tram or train you’ll only ever see me with a book, no kindle or e reader of any kind, and when I buy a book I keep them
People in this thread believe that the word "book" in this quote means "paper thing that I love to sniff, like the degenerate that I am." No. The quote is referring to TEXT, which can be transmitted electronically or orally. Spend more time reading and less time sniffing and self-congratulating.
Absolutely. My youngest was just telling me that the thing he really wants more than anything else when it comes to gift giving is books. He's 29...that makes me ever so proud. I bought him the book was raving about wanting...Piranesi. The book I currently love is The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Mark EXEMPT on your W4 form on your Hr website today and bankrupt this regime.
i am always confused w these arguments - are we talking about paper or reading. both are great and neither depends on the other.
I agree Patti
Yes.. they are awesome.
❤️
Instilled the love of books
There are actually more books now than there have ever been.
It’s a wonderful thing. The smell, the feel of the paper. I tried e-readers for a bit but they’re just not the same.
E readers have their place. One thing I love about physical books is the transformation that they go through as they are read.. especially if you read it on your commute or on holiday..the creases, the folds, the marks, the book gets thicker, more worn, they look read.
"E readers have their place." Their place is to transmit text to the eyes. Therefore, their place is the same as any book. I have no time for literal bibliophiles, pawing and sniffing at their pulp totems. Show me to wherever the READERS gather. The ritual book-owners are nothing.
You're a Spine-creaser! Page-greaser Bookmark pleaser Don't you mess around with me
Couldn't live without books -- real ones, not digital. bigthink.com/neuropsych/d... thought you and those replying to you would like this article.
We are becoming more like machines, whilst the machines are becoming us. Books are a refuge & a place of humanity.
Books are heavy when trying to move them. And as you get older the more that matters. I can create the library I always wanted but could never have on a device. I do miss the smell though. I love the smell of old books. Someone should make that a scent for perfume or room spray.
Books don't need the internet. They don't need electricity. Or upgrades. You can add your own annotations with a pencil (or pen). There are no licenses to worry about if you give them away. If your computer crashes, your book still works. Windows Mac Android or nothing, the book runs fine. Books.
It’s what’s on the page that’s most threatened, not the physical book. “Content farming” is a new AI industry. Mass numbers of AI generated non-fiction books flooding the market. For fiction, the quality of the prose is still in its infancy (still requires a human hand) but it won’t be for long.
I was always Team Book in the past, until I spent a year and a half homeless (and later lost all my possessions). Then I realized how comforting it is to have all my books on one device. There are some types of books I still prefer to have in physical form, though.
i ve been fighting tooth and nail against homelessness... the slide is slow but real. i keep my things in a storage where i sometimes live (sometime in my car). my storage is filled w boxes of books. fiction, reference, textbooks, art, poetry - some new, some antique... if i have a home, it's books.
wow, good point.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” - Charles W. Eliot
Never. I can't read books on Kindle.
I prefer books. The smell, the texture of the paper, and cover ooooo nothing like it Well except for the smell, when you walk into an old bookstore, that can is something that can never be replaced.🥰🥰 ✌️💙
I agree.
Absolutely the best! 📚📚📚
Depends on the book.
I ❤️ Patti.
Me too
Patti 💗
And then she said, "5 points from Gryffindor!"
I can't think of a single better brain exercise to get people's mushy critical thinking gears wound again than reading books. Good books force you to take part, you're invested in them.
yes i love reading books all my life love reading
Trying hard not to. Bought a new softcover and it cost $27 😬 I miss when they were more affordable. Writers def deserve the cash but I can't afford the books.
The only way a book can be taken from you is if someone enters your home and steal it from you which is illegal. You don't need internet. You don't need any kind of power. An EMP can't destroy them. But most important, they smell better than any phone or tablet
But I love my kindle.
Never ever.
I'm reading her book right now. It's very good.
« You know that we are living in a material world And I am a material girl « Madonna.
UGH. Patti. What an angel.
Kindle's okay on yhe airplane, but otherwise books are better.
💯
A book on a Kindle is still a book! A book is a published document It reflects the day it was published It is ad free It is static and unchanging (per edition) Its not a blog! I have vacilatted between physical and eBooks, but theyre still books...
I'm lost without them
What is there *not* to love about books?
Love Patti ❤️
I love books ...always have since I was a lonely child in an orphanage ...my home is full of book cases.
I use Libby all the time. Currently I have 15 books on hold, and when they are ready to borrow, I download them on my kindle or phone. I love to borrow audiobooks from my library. I have my favorite narrators like Julia Whelan. Such a treat to use Libby.
Oh phew, not THE Book - just any book 😅
Fact
Yes, they are.😊 I love their scent and flipping the pages. ❤️
And books don’t have to be plugged in like if we go into a Civil War we may lose all connections to technology
My household has turned into a mini library during the last year. Reading is contagious
I can read a book on my technology. I only got like 20 books
www.howlifeunfolds.com/learning-edu...
I love this, thank you. And reading a real book helps one to sleep better! terrific.
Books create a linear narrative
Good on Patti 👍
I like moving without it costing me an extra $800 to haul around tree pulp and ink. And I like having more room in my home for things like my VR dojo. I kept the graphic novels, cuz those are a visual medium in ways text kinda isn't, and went full-Kindle. Booyah.
nice to meet you. disabled black trans man here i'm going to be running for office, or try to but i'm poor. i'm on the verge of being homeless. i've contacted 211 and mutual aid orgs. it's not enough if you or anyone you know can donate/share it'd be much appreicated ca: mphighaf staying mad
Share books. Share recommendations. Celebrate books with friends and family
Yes!
🩵 🙌
Agree! #LoveBooks
Especially now, when "Rewrite with AI" is becoming ordinary… everything truly human reaches a new level. Human experience is the premium currency
It proves to visitors that I have books they I may or may not have read😬 Lots and lots of books.
Don't worry. The printed word may die but books never will. Just like TV will never die. It didn't die when it stopped coming in via roof antenna and it hasn't died from being on services not channels. There'll always be books to read even when they're being beamed directly into your brain.
I write things in notebooks and composition books all the time. Physical media is important!!!! I read books too!!!!
💯
The greatness of the book is also the reason why there is no danger that it will be abandoned. The popularity of reading books might go up and down but I don't think people will stop reading any more than they'd stop eating. And if they do... that means book prices would plummet - more for me!
totally
i love books also
The same is true for physical copies of music, movies, & shows. Art in its physical is sacred & must be protected.
If only I could afford them now. I’m re-reading the precious ones I own.
I agree!
Here's another" www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/wbkyd...
and www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ldbwt...
And they are a joy to write.
watch out for book mold. just sayin!
Get a library card and go see the amazing range of stuff you can check out!
Love the smells of the books when you first walk in the library. Awakens the senses, reading is so much more!😊
Absolutely. Libraries are peak civilization. We must use them to protect them!!
agreed
Agreed, she is great, see her live if you can. RR HofF performance with Bruce and other Jersey sound. Very good.
I used to read the shit out of books in school. Loved series like A Series of Misfortunate Events, I Am Number Four, Scythe, Ready Player One (much better book than the movie), Full Metal Alchemist, Lockdown, and more. These days I'm not reading as much. Wish I could say I was, but I kinda stopped.
Still working on What If? 2 by Randall Munroe (@xkcd.com) Loved the first one, someday I'll finish the second
I’m currently reading Version Zero by David Yoon which relates to this quote quite well.
Still have a library card, I have 3 books checked out now… “Book Mobile” came in to my neighborhood in 1950, where I discovered the world written on a paper page.
Books and music are essential.
i like design and printed media but im not much of a reader. nice paper and card stock the different finishes and smells. Maybe there should be a service where you can get 1 copy of your ebook printed and bound all nice. so you can read it first then decide if you would like a keepsake.
That would be cool.
Screens harm your eye sight Books don’t
A technology perfected over 570 years, which is why books work so well.
Records are pretty cool too.
And libraries!
I love books!
We thought e-books would be the death of physical books but turns out people (me included) love a physical book. Can’t show off your collection to your friends if it’s all online, and if you can’t do that, then, like, what’s even the point?
@pepalabras.bsky.social
Please tell me, I’m not the only one that sees snape
We have literature from hundreds to thousands of years ago because it was written down in physical books. What are the odds anyone will be able to read an ebook in a few hundred years? wiganlanebooks.co.uk/blog/interes...
Always will buy books, I have that many that I still haven’t read. Books are awesome and my go to when I need some quiet time for me 📚📚 🩷🩷🩷
I love walking into a house with lots of books. Books are sexy.
And nothing's better than that new book smell.
Agree 100%
It’s amazing to me that no one knows who Patti Smith is….
Books are freedom
They are! I still can't make myself use an e-reader.
One of my favorite and most beautiful of books is William Dana Orcutt's, In Quest Of The Perfect Book: Reminiscences & Reflections Of A Bookman. Without the reading of books and the necessity of libraries we are a less meaningful life form.
Until science replicates the smell of an old book, ebooks will be an addition to my repertore not a replacement. And even then I only really use ebooks because I'm going blind.
If you mean a physical book say so? Seems from the comments that's what meant? A book is a book. Delivered many ways... Hardback, PaperBack, eBook, library edition, audio book, braille..... The things that define a book are not about its form!!!
I love books❤️❤️
I have thousands. Need more.
Brava Patti Smith. I am currently reading books from my adolescence and understanding the impact they had on my imagination and life
People Have The Power.
True! NOTHING can replace a good book! Books are pure magic. Every book is a world of its own. Let's travel and learn.♥️
She is one of my favorite singers.
She is an amazing writer as well, I’ve been finally reading her whole catalog. So much subtlety in the mundane.
Before long we will have no books to read they would have all been burnt, the way people are being brainwashed and going along willingly with the alternate ways of thinking that books (knowledge)are dangerous.
Might there come a day where authors and publishers refuse to put content online to protect their IP from large language programmes of AI companies?
how cool is Patti Smith? that would be super cool. I knew someone friendly with the band...
Patti Smith is awesome! What a poet.
Right on Patti!
As an author and avid reader, PLEASE DON'T ABANDON THE PHYSICAL BOOK!
We keep on reading, we keep on writing.
💯 I would wilt in a world without physical books 📚💙
