There have been countless studies into why people so frequently vote against their own interests (a lot people incorrectly think it’s a new phenomenon), and the answer is pretty much always “it’s really easy to dupe low-info voters into believing they can stand in the rain without getting wet.”
Example: Back in 2016 there was a ballot measure in Maine that would’ve banned “over the back fence” gun sales. The NRA spent millions on an ad blitz full of lies like “you won’t be able to lend guns to friends or relatives” and “your kids won’t be able to inherit your guns.” And it worked.
Almost 50% of our 1.5 million residents own guns, once you’re outside of Portland you’ll be hard-pressed to find people on the left or right who have a negative opinion of them. Thanks to the NRA and GOP’s efforts the measure got shot down in an absolute landslide, it wasn’t even close.
Almost 50% own or at least live with guns, I should say. Last I checked it was 48% of all households, and those are just the legal owners. Shit gets weird real fast the farther north of Augusta you get.
