Also the choice of words "he marked himself as" instead of language like "he expressed both his Asian heritage and African citizenship" (or whatever word would be most correct instead of "citizenship")

'marked himself as' is not in the article. It says >Asked to identify his race, he checked a box that he was “Asian” but also “Black or African American,” The question was not about citizenship.
