I believe NYT's goal here is to weaponize identity politics to sow division among Mamdani's diverse base of support. In this instance, I imagine NYT is trying to fabricate a wedge in an attempt to separate black voters

Yeah, that is the main thing... But they're also not missing the chance to push their ”Black people have it too easy" angle.
