Man, this has been confusing. So: * the data centres do exist, they're just on rented premises that are being kept secret * obviously they haven't invested in $7.5b of servers/infrastructure that's a "we plan to in the next 1000 years maybe" number? * The $10b to gdp number is bs but that's BAU

Isn’t it just servers in someone else’s DC at present?

Is the $7.5b how much they're aiming to earn from NZ customers perhaps?

I see their point though: the data centre is the servers not the air con or the walls or the friends you made along the way.

I have some spare space in my apartment if AWS wants to rent some rack space. It's even a wetland (the ceiling leaks) if they'd like to rip that out too.

It is genuinely embarrassing for AWS. If the plan was to launch ap-southeast-6 using colo they could have done that years earlier. It was clearly not the plan.

I was also wondering where the 7.5b was gonna be spent and the 1000 jobs were coming from if they are just leasing space in someone else’s datacentre 🤷🏻‍♀️

If they exist, why are they not selling space in them through AWS? Why is there no Amazon warehouse/online store? Like everywhere else they put AWS data centres

The newsroom article seems definitive. Co location of a slab of AWS gear at some one elses gaff doesnt count.

I call it Telco2's Auckland Availability Zone. Stout Street is our Wellington AZ. Availability across the two zones is high.

I have slightly-less than fond memories of a 36-hour stint moving gear from shared to dedicated rack one weekend. Getting layer 2 ex-Dunedin to NZ-IX was a game-changer. (Yes I used the router-on-a-swivel chair migration trick)
