As someone who’s worked on these kinds of cases, I can tell you that you don’t conclusively establish fraud in a couple of days just by storming the Bastile. What they’re probably finding is programs they don’t like—the ones that help real people and make our lives better.

I think it's Trump reflex to instantly deny any obligation that involves the payment of money. The next Treasuries auction (assuming the ceiling gets raised) may reveal that the world's financial markets don't like a possible deadbeat, especially when tens of billions are involved.

That's especially true with government payment systems. I worked on a couple of very large ones and they are very complicated, especially the rules for determining eligibility and the amount of payment. Kids with no background in these programs would be totally lost examining them..
