My dad once took my brother and I back to school a week late because he hadn't checked the dates properly. My dad was deputy director of adult education for the county council at the time.

I think mum and him had both just assumed the term dates were the same for our primary as they were for the grammar mum worked at, and didn't check.

You absolutely would not be able to do that these days. We once had a mix up over who was supposed to tell the school one of our kids was off sick and the school had got in touch by like 10am.

I have got the kids dressed and out of the house on an inset day. I then had to hastily take the day off to "have one last great day of the holiday"
