We could have maglev trains traversing the country and doing speeds fast enough that people would have given up on flying.

maglev still not reality for long distance at high speed anywhere. Japan’s effort to do this has had a lot of setbacks.
The use case for maglev is difficult to make. Conventional rail is outstandingly efficient, and can be made quiet and smooth (quieter, apparently, than the TransRapid design). The track is a tiny fraction of the cost. Maglev works well for medium speed, like the autonomous Aichi Linimo.
China has 3600 bullet trains and 175 000 kilometres of railways which is the largest on Earth and it's set to expand by another 40 000 kilometres in the next 5-10 years...
… they’re not maglev.
They are in fact bullet trains reaching speeds of up to 350kph with the Shanghai Maglev reaching speeds of 430kph...
The Shanghai maglev is very short distance, 20 miles, it reaches max speed for moment before decelerating. Everything else is rolling stock.
The airport line is essentially identical to the German TransRapid. It is currently limited to 300kph, which it reaches after approximately two minutes. The entire trip is eight minutes, so it spends approximately half its trip time at top speed.
Probably wouldn't hurt to google "Chinese bullet trains" and give yourself a crash course on the topic...
That looks like a clip of the Japanese maglev to me
It probably is, but the GIF section doesn't have much choice...
DON'T BLINK ! 👀👀👀 . www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HcY...
Please understand the difference between maglev and high speed rail on tracks.
Being condescending when you have no idea what you’re talking about is quite humorous, thanks for the laugh.
The topic of the original post is high speed trains. It was you who narrowed the discussion down to only maglev buddy !!!
Funny how that works, please pay attention.
Plus it's overly expensive, Osaka to Tokyo is like the one place in the world where Maglevs would work
I’m not even sure why they’re doing it, this is a relatively short route already served every 15 minutes by their fastest trains and not at full capacity.
It's actually at capacity during peak hours and is overcapacity if you include the flights between the two cities
Why? We can have traditional trains doing that. Proven technology and construction.
China managed to build this shit in 3 years! The things we could do with a planned economy instead of making the lobbyists richer!
That's always the problem we put preserving a company's ability to make money over advancement in those fields
