Yeah but letting him resist so easily in service of that contrast destroys the tension of the main MacGuffin, is my point. The spawn of Denethor are not so important that their story should supersede that of the Ring itself.

It is not the story of the Ring that nobody but one small hobbit can resist it. Several resist. It's resisting once you've *worn* it that was practically unique to Frodo. (Toms Bombadil is an outlier and should not be counted.)
Many could resist the ring and what sets them apart was love and loyalty to someone or something else because that's what the ring was made of - Saurons unsatisfied desire for power.
This is very well explained and I'm certainly not enough of a LotR fan to argue with someone who chooses the username you did!
Actually my name comes from the city rather than the race. I wouldn't call myself an uberfan, I just enjoyed the book and remembered that many resisted the ring and all had that one thing in common
i love that this thread is partly good-natured fan opinions, but also a deeper meditation on what makes a person good 😍
(and Bilbo and Sam being the only people to ever willingly give away the Ring having worn it!)
And even Bilbo had to be *convinced* by Gandalf. Sam did it all on his own!
