There's a very large ocean between Australia and the US. I can see Washington State from only a few kilometers (huh, huh?) from my house.
Nothing to do with the US, whose cultural imperialism we still feel strongly. Australia decided to convert. Bipartisan. Metric Converion Board established. A new metric measure introduced each quarter. Measuring devices banned unless they included metric. Road signs --> kms.
