I think the contention is with African *American* since he is technically just... African. Just an incredibly stupid story all around.

I get it yet also — I have family that is Italian-American. Mexican-American (although interestingly the Mexican-Americans are less likely to use the hyphenate). The grammatical logic only doesn’t hold here because the US uses “African American” as a synonym for “Black.”
