Not cruel enough.
Not cruel enough.
Thrashed by a lady cyclist, who is noted for her athletic powers - The Illustrated Police News, July 1, 1899
Iconic
The whole town came out to see him get beat up
What a delightful story. Can I pay Michael Caine to narrate this
A scientific fashion? She tried to double-blind him?
Ha!
play stupid games, win stupid prizes is eternal
“To the delight of several colliers”
Colliers being good allies ftw
"Catch these hands in scientific fashion, smartass"
TBH it's a miracle that riding a bicycle among indifferent and murderous drivers doesn't make *more* people cruel.
I recall someone using a bicycle to attack and bite defenseless wasps.
Can you say what paper this was in Buffalo, or post link? I’m giving a public talk on women bicycling in Buffalo c. 1890s in September and teaching class on The Bicycle. Thanks!
The back, shoulder, neck & wrist pain induced by a dropped-bars riding position & a "wedgie" seat could worsen anyone's general disposition ...
Do you have a censorship-free version?
This probably because they were actually able to escape a stalker.
we can only hope
dunno, but it'll make their legs stronger so they can kick the patriarchy's ass better
@naomiwolf.bsky.social
ummm, what are you trying to say 😅
Well I know when I got my bicycle age, well say, 6, I had a sudden urge to tell my father exactly how I felt about an overheard conversation where he and mum were going to allow our dog to 'run away'. I didn't tho' soooo
Damn, 19th Century news getting wheel hot takes here
Always has. www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id...
Would've been good to be able to actually read the article. As it is, it's just a headline with no context.
damn are you gonna leave my shitposting account a 1 star review on Yelp
Bicycles don't run people over, WOMEN run people over.
Yes! Take Amy normal person and put them on a bicycle and they become a MONSTER! Oh, wait, that's a car in the suburbs.
They see me rollin' They hatin'
Yes but if you're not into it you are hopelessly vanilla and unworthy of respect
no, it is clearly the puffy sleeves that do that
I'd imagine cycling in a boned corset would make you pretty pissed off after a few miles.
Corsets are surprisingly comfortable once properly fitted and broken in! I dabble in historical costuming and that’s one of the more persistent myths about them.
a question in a hed is always answered with a no
but I might be rethinking it based on the full pic
Voluminous skirts and that little seat that is just plain uncomfortable? Let me think - YES.
Assuming we need a bicycle to be cruel is rather offensive. I dont need any bicycle.
̶C̶r̶u̶e̶l̶ Cool😎
If you stand between Kristen Faulkner and a gold medal, possibly.
maybe cruel women just like to ride bikes?
"the bicycle will enhance women's mobility and allow them to do more things that men do not want them to do" was a tech moral panic that proved 100% correct. like one of the most accurate predictions about a technology of the last 200 years
its made fun of because people (correctly) think the predicted effects of the bike are good, but it ended up being right
To be fair, they were also saying the bikes would have us all cumming in public all the time from the vibration.
that just goes to show that pormo brain is nothing new
although maybe in the past it was more creative because they didn't have the internet
omg this is a good one.
What’s in the list of things that make men cruel?
Entitlement, mostly
I was gonna go with “anything and everything” but entitlement is definitely the most salient.
maybe it's a response
i know it wasn't the point, but everyone who cycles should have read this at least once: www.bicycling.com/health-nutri...
Thank you. This is a fascinating read.
Ah I see my problem. I've been using the 'bicycle for the mind' too much.
Yes, but in a cool, fun way.
youtu.be/r4kiXh8YOzk?...
Yes.
@katie.bzky.team
my goat headline
Oh man Now I know what happened
I was coming here to post this very image.
@gspeng.bsky.social 👆
Yes.
😂
Riding the bicycle that makes women cruel to the beach that makes you old
Or do cruel women bicycle?
Bicycles, like alcohol and money, don't change people. They simply reveal them.
📌
Why hasn't the Left provided an alternative to bicycles? Or are they okay with cruel women?
Sadly it would be more that the left blames the right for bicycles, believing they are simply empowering the oligarchy while the right does the same and claims they are too enabling of women
ableism, consumerism, anti-body positivity
perpetuation of performative whiteness, an apalling lack of solidarity with other women who lack legs, funds or motivation to cycle
and can barely afford their daily doses of radium and cocaine as it is
What a silly take this is
I mean I am on the left but just replace bibcycle with many different novel technologies and this is what sadly happens
Including technologies that are relevent to accessibility
No you're not
Being self aware and self critical of ourselves is important right nkw exactily because people are trying to divide and distract us.
Denying solidarity with any individual only breaks down relations and the ability to build it despite affective polarization. It makes us mere tools in the hands of the exact people we wish to fight aganist paws by literally just doing the opposite of whatever they do
Yes (laudatory)
Hark! A velocipedestrienne!
I have a shirt based on this comic and it’s one of my favorites.
fire!
"cruel" aka "make it easier to get away from your BS" Can't have that
You need the full image to see who she's running over bsky.app/profile/noth...
Twisted Metal with only bicycles would go hard
I thought I had a link for the full article, but I can't find it.
In high school, I did research on the early years of women and bicycles. Bikes were roundly condemned as leading to the downfall of women because, horrors of horrors, they gave women freedom to seek jobs farther away from home. It’s really fascinating.
Also there was some weird sexual prurience about the saddle, same kind of thing we see about tampons these days.
Here in the Netherlands, there is some evidence that the popularity of the electric fatbike is leading to some emancipation of muslim girls, because they have more radius and they can travel to neighbourhoods outside of their family's eyes
Not enough, apparently
I mean have you seen Maëva Squiban race? Of course it does
