Obviously it won't fix everything and there will be work to do, but their entire tenuous coalition is held together by fear and/or devotion, and the idea that he'd be able to inspire the same level of either is fucking comical

Exactly this. Vance doesn't have the sauce to hold the coalition together. Sure, Trump is just a grifter too, but Trump is a grifter with _will_ and _charisma_, the stick and carrot for keeping his back-knifing fascist lickspittles in line.
