The entire business model of R1 public universities rests on 4 revenue sources: 1. Federal grants 2. Private gifts/endowments 3. Tuition (esp. from foreign students) 4. State $ For decades, ๐ in 1-3 offset a secular ๐ in 4. Now, 1 & 3 are being decimated & 4 ain't coming back. The math is clear.
The cost of college is about to go up astronomically. As if it wasn't already ridiculously expensive.

Cutbacks in faculty and courses can also make it impossible to graduate from a program in 4 years. Students might need to take an extra 5th year just to take all the courses required for their major. Iโve seen this happen in our modern languages department.
As someone whose kid is about to start his freshman year next week at my stateโs beloved ๐/๐ State U, this is terrifying.
Don't forget the administration increased taxes on endowments (#2), too. Squeezing all 4...

4 is actually up significantly over time in absolute terms and even per-student terms. It's just that growth in the other revenue sources is up more and so is declining as a share of income (and also as a share of GDP and of total govt expenditures, I think). www.urban.org/policy-cente...
