Your religion can tell you how to live your life, if you choose. Your religion CANNOT tell ME how to live MY life. Get that through your fucking heads, American (southern) Christians.

Fuck some southern baptists for sure!!! I loathe them almost as much as the Catholic Church.
The last two Popes have vastly improved the Catholic Church, by my estimation.
I still have beef with them over child abuse but Francis really made some strides in improving the church and its relationships with followers. So I give them that. He was by far my favorite.
As we have seen with recent cases, Baptists and Evangelicals are now taking over the Christian child molester mantra. Absolutely was inexcusable.
They absolutely are.
*western followers. As a Pole, the church there has been more toxic than ever, and with the blessing of the Vatican. Francis had a message for the west when their cameras rolled, and one for everyone else, and they didn't meet at the same point.
My least dispised one.
They’ve moved the goalpost because well, follow the $$$$. How much did they have to pay out to sexually assaulted children in their care? They finally realized the LGBTQIS2+ are a viable commodity.
Maybe, but it’s still based on magical thinking where in even these last two popes believe in a supernatural entity that controls all of mankind’s endeavors and is responsible for our existence. That our existence is possible only because of this imaginary entity, and we must worship said entity.BS!
Honestly, this is the last of these messages I'm replying to. I'm an atheist. None of this has anything to do with the merits of the Catholic church. Nor is your comment going to make the Catholic Church go away. From a practical perspective, I prefer to have hopes that are more progressive.
I’m also atheist after be raised in the Catholic Church.I don’t expect it to go away in my lifetime for sure & I’m 78 in poor health.I don’t give a fuck who the Pope is! It’s all magical thinking if they think this god is going to improve anything in mankind’s existence. We have to do it ourselves.
Yeah, and the American Catholics hated the last one and this new one and complain about him being "woke" - they are not real Christians and don't even know what Christianity looks like anymore.
I'll believe that limited to the MAGA portion of American Catholics and Bishops who are slowly being pushed aside. Most American Catholics don't even go to church.
In the U.S., most Christians are not Evangelical, and most Evangelicals are not Christian.
Facts!
Evangelicals were fiercely against involvement in politics until around Nixon time political operatives started to weaponize their beliefs. And now, they have converted into a marketing arm of the very anti-Christian "prosperity bible" crap.
TRUTH. It is now about POWER and GREED.
Prolifers do nothing for life , children & women.
the Southern Baptist convention is an “Evangelical” sect. And it does present the largest grouping of US christians.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not even sure what constitutes being evangelical anymore. It used to require being "born again" but, in that case, their indoctrinated children would not be evangelicals.
"Evangelical" was a term adopted by fundies as a marketing strategy, since "Fundamentalism" wasn't packing them in. But it's an anti-intellectual, populist movement that says you don't have to learn from stuffy, effete committees of seminary graduates to understand the Bible. This appealed to...
I found this interesting take on the origins of evangelicalism. medium.com/love-thy-nei...
...men who had lost their sense of what it means to be a man during the Industrial Revolution. Brawn was becoming redundant, and engineers and other pencil pushers were providing for their families better. Pile that on top of the emasculation of who instructed them Sundays on right and wrong...
...and populist think-with-your-gut evangelism seemed quite appealing by comparison. The committees would have to rope in the wayward every ten years or so. You can see such taking the evangelists to task by those who actually knew the Bible in "Elmer Gantry" -- a pretty important work.
Based on catholic definitions: Evangelical Christianity is any form of Christianity with a constant force of continual recruitment. So catholic missionaries would be “evangelical christians” even though US “evangelical Christians” would claim “catholics aren’t christians”.
While Southern Baptists were once a larger share of the U.S. population, they are currently a shrinking denomination, with recent estimates placing their membership at around 12.7 million people as of 2024. This represents roughly 4% of the U.S. adult population, according to the Pew...
... Research Center in 2019, though that proportion is likely lower now due to the continued decline in membership. Americans have a tendency to overestimate the size of different demographics.
Just because there are eleven thousand different types of christians doesn’t stop this from being the larges and loudest plurality, specifically dominating the money powers in Florida and Texas to hate NY and CA and remain loyal to the confederacy. They did what they did.
Curious 𝑛𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑟
Read the whole thread and you’ll realize maga/confederacy ties are directly part of the topic, despite curious efforts to distract from that clear connection.
Yes!
THIS!!! This is why my brother and I no longer go to mass or support Catholicism. About 10 hrs ago, my SIL lost a child around 20-22wks (cord around neck). The Catholic Church denied them a burial mass bc he wasn't considered a "baby." UUUUUHHHH, Come the fvck again?!
Ahem, recovering American Catholic here; loved Francis. More than any other pope in my lifetime, and I am GenX. When I was a little girl in the 70s, we used to attend folk mass; the priest had an acoustic guitar, and all of the children sat cross legged at the front and some of us had tambourines
Agree with you except for they are real Christians. To say they aren’t is fallacious. Christianity has always been this way and it’s not just southern Christians either. The Bible is just as vile as they are
Not sure I agree as being Christian would imply they follow the teachings of Christ, which they clearly do not do. But it's just semantics without importance and I hear your point.
Umm is Jesus god? Isn’t he meant to be god in the Bible? Maga Christians follow the Bible as well they just cherry pick different parts of it than others. The Bible also promotes genocide, rape, slavery (get your slaves from the heathens that surround you) and to subjugate women.
So according to what I’ve heard preached, he is the son of God but is also God in human form (yeah, I know.) That & the Holy Spirit make up the trinity. The way I read it it’s that all of those things are what was promoted in those times, and based on how that ultimately worked out, don’t do those.
Calling yourself a Christian and actually following Christian teachings are not the same thing.
So it just matters what parts of the Bible get cherry picked and what’s not? Yes Jesus said to do some good things but the rest of the Bible promotes very vile ideas and maga Christians are following them. Also, isn’t Jesus god?
Those vile ideas are supposed to be what’s preached against. But then again I got chased out of a few churches for saying that and calling people out on it. And yes those churches ended up being MAGA. SMH.
Why are they supposed to be preached against? It’s the Bible, gods word and law. Jesus said he came to enforce those vile things not change them.
I’m glad you asked this and here’s where I differ from a lot of people. People didn’t know back then what we know now. Despite the Bible being the word, it is the corruption of man that is twisted words via writing all of the different versions. 1/2
It could easily be said that the book was corrupted for political reasons, similar to how it is abused today. I’ve always told people the spirit tells me this. Not to mention, common sense shows that people can be stupid. lol I usually just go by the 10 Commandments and love one another b/c of that.
The Bible is fiction
The CC has been hijacked by the Opus Dei wing of the Church.
Neither of the last two Popes have been associated with Opus Dei . . . Nor is their messaging.
Allow me to clarify ... the American Orthodox Catholic Church movement.
I have to admit to not being familiar with that . . . But, Orthodox don't come under the Roman Catholic Pope.
That’s because they’re all reading the wrong parts of the Bible…or perhaps just filtering the words through hate colored glasses.
They would have put Jesus in Alligator Alcatraz for sure
Had me laughing
There is still a tendency to cover up p.p. : priestly pedophilia.
Again, I have only claimed improvement, which is hard to deny. I would argue that it has been a large shift, when you consider we are talking about the Catholic Church.
Money talks. The exodus of American Catholics has hurt their coffers. They had to do something. People think of the good Parish Priest instead of Corporate HQ. And the "Pray to End Abortion" crowd are a direct link to what is happening in the Good Ole Fascist USA.
6 of 8 SC justices are Catholic or raised Catholic. It’s an over 50 year plan to force their Catholic crap down our throats. My Huguenot ancestors had it right.
Well, the last one was more like that cop from. The LEGO movie. I've seen his words to the "west" (I.e. "who am I to judge?) And having Polish TV, to the rest (i.e. ranting about LGBTQ folks and what they call "gender ideology" and what not.) One was meant to get butts in the pews to fill the basket
I don't remember saying he was perfect. He was an 80 something year old celibate (supposedly) man whose life revolved around a fairy tale. I only claimed that he and his successor are vast improvements compared to the direction the Church had been going under the Polish and German Popes.
As I said, only in the west (mostly the US.) It was disheartening to see two seemingly contradictory messages being sent. We will have to see how his successor will be like. So far from what I see, he seems to not use his position to cause harm to others, bit it still is very early on.
But I don't understand, because even though my Polish is horrible, I do a cursory following of Polish news and it was on Western media where I read about his regrettable gender comments, not Polish. I never had the impression it was done in a devious way, as you seem to be implying.
The western media I've seen love to hang around that "who am I to judge?" comment on the plane (this was largely ignored from my observation of stuff on tvn24.) There was also terrible comments made not just on gender but also LGBT folks in general by clergy there that had 100% was backed by Vatican
How? I’m genuinely curious.
More tolerance and attempts to reign in corruption, for a start. Honestly, if you are commenting on this thread, I would assume you have a basic understanding of the positions of the past 4 Popes in which the "genuinely curious" part becomes suspect. If not, a quick search will inform you.
I’m glad to hear there may be more tolerance and less corruption.
Still a loooong way to go. And I do wish the church would stay out of politics.
If only the good christians would push back more against Christian nationalism and religious aggression within their overlapping circles.
Feel this in my soul as an East Texan.
And adding salt to shit soup makes it more edible. I still wouldn't consider it food.
The dumb fucks think compassion is the “devils handiwork.” For real. They don’t know shit. Fuck them all.
Christian here 🙋 I agree. I would just add the caveat that I'm prepared to have an adult conversation about why I live my life the way I do, and listen to why you feel differently. Grown up debate is allowed. Then we can shake hands, and agree to differ 🙂
Oh absolutely. When I say your religion gets to tell you how to live your life (if you choose to follow it), that also means I have no place at all to tell you that's right or wrong. It's YOUR religion and YOUR life. You are free to follow it - as long as doing so doesn't impede MY freedom not to. 😊
I think we shouldn’t differentiate at this point. The “southern” style of evangelicalism is the modus operandi of evangelicals in America. It’s the vast majority. The ones who keep their faith to themselves and don’t become rancid sacks of shit are the rarity, so they probably need the descriptor.
Even if they don't, they never quell the psychotic ones, so what good is it?
Ehhhh…a lot of them really put work into it. Sometimes more than atheists and agnostics. You’ll never find a bigger critic of the religious right than the religious left. And I give them credit for it. They do speak out, they just never get coverage.
I’m biased because I’m friends with a lot of Christian academics, mystics, etc even though I’m none of the above (function as an atheist, really more agnostic). I also see religion as more an evil than anything, but also a part of the human experience we’ve yet to move beyond.
But I’ll still respect believers who are kind, speak out, and so on.
Let's address the real root of the problem: It is selfish for anyone to pretend god is there. It is a greedy lie every time, and they lie to cover their lies. Instead of endlessly seeking truth and updating their beliefs as they go, they limit themselves to "god" and warp the real world we share.
This is the fundamental point. They can use it as a guide to their living, and we can hope that they take notice of the bit about not killing, not stealing, and not coveting. But they do not have the right to tell anyone else what to do.
Catholics are right up there as well. See the not-so-SupremeCourt.
