Why are seeing the media (eg LBC) leading the news bulleting with stories about rail fair rises next year by 5.8% ... & then going on to say that nothing has yet been decided by the government & we don't know how price rises will be determined this year ...followed up by criticism of the 'rises'?

It's what these days passes for a headline. A bit like the economy showing growth, but the BBC frames it by saying growth is slowing.

I think the situation is: the privately run services will see fare rises of 5.8%, unless the Govt decides to increase the subsidy; & the Govt decides the increase for the publicly run services. It could decide to raise the latter by 5% so they could limit the former to say 5%.

They are basing it on the formula that the government used to increase rail fares by this year. July's RPI + 1 and as this years RPI for July is 4.8% you get the 5.8% figure. Except, we don't know if the government will be using that formula for this year.

Yeah, remember all the stories about Reeves going to say 'trickle down'. Don't think she ever did, nor likely she ever would but nobody recalls the details of the opinions they form.

Had a good look and Reeves wasn't going to say 'trickle down' and never was. She said "ripple effect across all sectors of our economy". www.itv.com/news/2025-07...

Many like to claim that she supports the idea of 'trickle down'. Yet she has repeatedly spoken out against the idea - both before the general election last year and most recently last week in a video she did answering questions with a finance influencer. 1/2

Truth is, it suits some on the far left to claim she does support it as it aids their efforts to undermine the Labour government. 2/2

I have/had a pair of very nice friends who both loved Corbyn's government. Since then, Starmer and Labour can do no good in their eyes and all they look for is more confirmation bias. It's odd as they are both decent intelligent people but nobody can live up to their fantasy Corbyn PM .

Is it because they are desperate for NF to be PM and it’s easier to spread misinformation than do any real journalism?

It is the modern curse of narrative journalism. They come upon a possibly scoop sensationalist topic, then bias their narrative to make it seem even worse. Then they realize they are making it all up, so double down on the potential fear and write a totally misleading headline. Total crappage.

It’s becoming a very noticeable pattern again from our media. Lbc (as do others) takes its lead from the usual non dom media sources… same people who sold Brexit are now selling Farage. Democracy pmsl
