Disabled persons yearn for alternatives since some hate cars so much

It's fine to shut down traffic on Sundays, but c'mon. Cars don't ruin cities. None of those businesses around you are going to receive deliveries via bike.
Bingo! Someone read the assignment.
It's an old town, built around the horse, but that's what makes it pedestrian friendly & community oriented.
So cool. I too think we need to encourage more communal congregation as it stimulates interactions that lead to conversations that, God willing, leads to problem solving, or at least it fosters empathy and understanding. How can we love our neighbors if we don't know them, right?
Convenience is hurting our physical & mental health, as well as our societal & democratic health.
Without a doubt.
Walked that route many times in the late 70's through the 80's. Often ran into many starving artist/musicians I knew that had spaces in the hood, as I did myself in the 80's. The sidewalk traffic after dark was far more dangerous than the street traffic. The real diversity is gone now though IMHOP ☹️
Don't hate the players. Organize the board.
Will be present for the next one
No one should be allowed to own a car.
We need starkly more investments in electric rail transportation. It solves many more problems than EV alone ever will.
I agree, but you must agree that cyclists ruin the countryside
Cities ruin cities, nothing like living in the countryside. 🙄
Was in Amsterdam and immediately began thinking of how to make biking far more safe and enjoyable in my city!
I saw you walk by but I was busy talking to some other people I know!
Chicago is a large city. Not everyone can conveniently bike or walk downtown. It’s not a timely process biking/walking from 95th on the southern end to Devon or Howard on the northern end. That area was dark & seedy in the 80s & 90s. I walked it at night (diehard Chicagoan). Gentrification is new.
The point is to create more 15 minute cities within the metropolis. Not everyone needs to conduct business downtown. Biking crosstown from 9500 South to 6400 North to Super Dawg isn't the point either, unless you're advocating for busi, shops, restaurants, etc to create South Side 15 min. cities.
Make that same argument to people who don’t live on the north side or near north side. There are huge pockets of the city where people are almost forced to drive or have long waits & reroutes for buses. The SE side is a great example of that. Some places on the SW side too. No 🚗 = north side bias.
Those areas are heavily residual. Lots of people cross the city everyday 2 find work outside of their neighborhoods. Some commuters even drive to up Waukegan for work or out near Aurora. Yes, micro cities would be nice but many of those homes aren’t mixed used commercial properties + food deserts.
Do this in January
That's beautiful!
Agree!
I love this post, and yes, I would love more open streets in Chicago.
Car free streets will also make it much more difficult for ICEtapo to abduct victims. Consider the LA towing success as well.
It’s been a lovely weekend.
My son lives in the city. No car. Walks or mass transit. Despite its inaccurate reputation, Chicago is a very walkable city.
And emissions ruin everything.
