Maybe...but 1) they knew when they signed up that they'd have to front for whoever is in the White House 2) they will find it easy to set up flashy, easy things for her to do far from actual work. She'll be like a thieving crow, always going after the glitter.
No career government employee in the foreign service signed up (20-25 years ago) to have clowns as ambassadors.
Everyone one of them, when they signed up, realized that they might have to be a representative for a government whose policies they might disagree with. DDT is an outlier here, but they all knew that the politics of the White House could range from FDR to Reagan, and beyond both of those.
Many people would refuse a job like this. They didn't. They benefit from this. The work can often be very intereting, & they make much more money that they would if they don't sign up. A few take a short-term paycut, but if one includes current housing subsidies and future pensions (with magnificent
health insurance), their future compensation is greater than they would get by not signing. There are also the dangled sweets of the revolving door: very lucrative gigs (in and out of the govt). In many ways, I emphathize with my friends in the Foreign Service. DDT is going to do extraordinary
damage to US national interests, to the interests of other people around the world, and to any FS career official who plans to act with professionalism. DDT is an enemy of such skills unless they immediately benefit him. I agree with you: their lives and careers are going to change drastically.
