I have decided that trans rights and Palestine are the best litmus tests for our era because they are the two most monstrous things that educated people can be in polite company with little consequence, so, big if true.
If you add Ukraine in there too you have a triangle of issues where, if someone is with me on all three, we’re almost certainly fellow travelers in general
That one is less instructive I think because vocal support for Ukraine after the invasion was encouraged in those same milieus, not least because they lie within the Western bloc, and because it's partly a function of one's priors about NATO which is not quite so open and shut.
In my case, I was forced to conclude that NATO was not so uniformly malign as I had believed it to be, and my distrust had led me to make wrong predictions about an invasion. But I'm not ashamed that anti-imperialism led me to distrust it, or that I lament the loss of Swedish and Finnish neutrality.

Yeah in combination they're very strong, because they cut across both blocs to an anti-imperialism of first principles. Ukraine on its own is less predictive than Palestine on its own, at least in the US and Europe. Maybe it's different in countries that have long recognized Palestine.
Yeah it's the combination that's key. It speaks to actually having principles, rather than just having a "team" you're rooting for whether they're right or wrong.
