The shining city on a hill is an ideal. Without ideals there is no America. It’s what it’s all about, having ideals to strive for. It’s the point of America, that human beings can coexist and thrive if human reason is shaped by high ideals. And Trumpism is desecrating everything that unites us.

Its worth pointing out that John Winthrop referred to the Plymouth colony as a “city on a hill” as a warning to his fellow colonists that the eyes of the world would be upon them. It was Reagan that added the “shining” part, because he was a jingoistic idiot.
I'm so sick of the juvenile method of thinking. The whole we are is a never ending battle amongst all nations constantly. No one nation is immune to authoritarianism or fascism. It is and has always been a fucking constant battle. Relying on some inherited goodness is how they us to loose our guard.
